Hey guys, new hemi bro here. I have a 2020 5.7 etorque with 48k miles at the moment and have recently discovered a faint sound. I’m pretty familiar with cars and sometimes I can feel like something might be off.

I’m currently having a faint tick coming from the front passenger side. The exhaust manifolds have been recently replaced about 5-10k miles ago by previous owner at the same dealership. However, this faint tick is only audible at the ~20-30ish mpg and 50ish mph with cruising throttle while it’s in Eco mode.

I’m thinking this tick might be coming from the MDS system when it goes down to 4 cyl and the cams are ticking? Is this normal? Are others hearing this? It’s faint enough that my phone can’t pick up the recording but I can hear it in the cabin while cruising with all windows and and radio off.

Maybe no one has this issue? Wondering if this is normal and others can confirm.

Faint sound seems normal, because lifters are gonna tick a bit.

Or, you could have an exhaust manifold leak which is common in our trucks.

Without hearing it in in a video though, we are just guessing.

Either way, extended warranty pretty much pays for itself with either of these common issues.

I've heard a very noticeable tick that coincides with rpms when in eco since I got my truck. Currently at 103k miles and it hasn't gotten any worse or better. No engine problems at all so I suspect it's normal. I think it actually may be the fuel injectors since I am under the impression that psi goes up a lot on them when in eco mode.

eco mode is associated with how much throttle in put you have and gear it's in. even when my mds is off it still shows eco on the dash. if you think it's mds related i suggest you get something that will turn off mds. you can set the gear limit to 8 on the steering wheel and that will turn off mds but you have to do it every time you start the truck so i got a pulsar so i can turn it off and it stays off.

If audible when driving I would think exhaust manifold again or oil used. On my 05 5.7 Durango, 13 Ram 5.7 with MDS and 21 5.7 I have now, never hear any tick. Could be from type oil. I've always used in hemi engines need/like moly, penzoil ultra platnium and 8oz lubeguard biotech to add extra dose of moly. Heard of others getting tick and going away when changed to better oil, pup is cheapest, heard redline was good too. I read posts in forums saying MDS needs to be on or starves lifters of oil, but I ran my 13 Ram for over 100k miles with MDS turned off in tune, engine ran as good as day I bought the truck(but, truck also had a extra strong oil pump, normal driving sat at 65psi and up to 70s when getting on gas). I dont like the feel when MDS kicks in, gives me thoughts of a slight miss, even though I know its mds.

This is the answer I’m looking for. I hope this is the case. The dealer is gonna look at it once more for me to confirm. I think they’re going to also drive a car on the lot to see if it’s the same.

Edit: took it to the dealer and they said they’re hearing a little bit of a ping during MDS. Master tech recommends running 89 octane for a few tanks to see if it goes away. If it doesn’t, they’ll try a carbon cleaning (which was once once already)

Ping is whole different thing, I would run premium to make sure and some good fuel system cleaner at 2x recommended dose. Rislone 4732 32oz is cheap and does good job, I put 20 gallons in tank and run about 16oz of the Rislone, can feel difference after tank gets near empty. Plus will clean injectors too, has p.e.a in it.
