I have the same issue. I hit one on the garage pulling out because I didn't know of this problem and the step was down

My Limited has the same intermittent issue but I haven't been able to figure out what triggers the delay. When I mentioned it to my dealer he said it was normal. I guess until F.C.A. figures it out I'll have to live with it. My Ford and Lincoln did not have that problem so why should it be normal for Ram?
Not normal because it happens inconsistently, nor does it make sense by any means. That is your typical ignorant dealer response. There is NO reason the running boards should still be deployed once you shift out of park if the door is closed - should immediately trigger a retraction. Obviously, this isn't always the case, and I've had it happen to me as well. Most likely a rare software issue, so I doubt it ever gets resolved... only way to maybe have it fixed is if enough people complain. Hopefully @RamCares can actually forward this information to a knowledgable person at RAM to get it looked into.

I have a similar issue with my 2020 1500 Limited. I have had strange retraction issues but they are now very slow deploying. I have to wait for them several seconds after the door has been opened. Anyone else experiencing slow deployment? They are always moving when I place my foot on them to enter the truck if I'm not paying attention and waiting for them.

It might well be "normal" for them to operate inconsistently. :D

Hi all,

I apologize for the frustration. If you would be willing to work with your dealers to have this addressed, I would be more than willing to ensure that your experiences are formally documented on our end, as well as escalate cases on your behalf so that a case specialist could work alongside you and your dealer to exhaust all available resources in addressing this concern.

Our team is always a private message away to get the process started.

Well, i have 2021 Limited and this issue still persists!! My passenger side steps will deploy but will not retract back at times. it has been random. but it has gotten more frequent. it will retract on its own during the drive. has been near impossible to catch a pattern. this is very very disappointing FCA! you sell these trucks for big money but to sell them glitchy like this is appalling! i hope Ram Cares takes note of this. I have to go to the dealership and I can already predict their response "we have not seen this".

Can the timing be adjusted on these? I think that is the only problem.

Coming from a Ford, the steps retraced way sooner than the Ram. I think by the time you get inside and turn the key, it interrupts the retracting command. If that command was given sooner or later, it would be fine. Get in the truck and start it before you close the door. Steps should go up as expected. I think I will close the door and count the seconds before the step goes up, then I will do it again and start the truck at the moment the steps are to retract and see if that cancels out that function. I will report back with findings.

Yeah…it’ll work fine if you wait to start until the step retracts. But it’s a little unpredictable if you “jump in and go”.

Hannah, is it possible to change the timing on the running boards? If not then there is nothing else to do. I am not sure if it can be changed in the programming or not.

We recommend taking your vehicle into your local Ram dealership for an official diagnosis first. We work alongside our dealers to provide the best service possible. Our team cannot speculate on the condition or performance of your vehicle and as such rely on official diagnosis from a dealer technician to better assist.

Thank you!

This issue persists. I have a 2021 1500 Limited Longhorn with 5700 miles that experiences this a couple times a week on the driver's side. My truck was at the dealer on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 and they stated "we have not see this before and cannot explain it".

Also my running boards are not square in-line with the body and it is dramatic when they are retracted. The rear is much lower than the front on both sides. The dealer said they had adjusted them as far as they can.

Both issues are annoying and I hope to get them fixed. If @RamCares is interested in assisting, I would be willing.

On that last point…the body itself is curved, while the boards are straight, so you may not get it exactly as you want it. Best of luck either way.

Hi Hannah,
I dropped my truck off at the dealership today and explained to them the issue that I have been facing with the side steps. Unfortunately, I had not checked this response from you here.

Yep, my 21 limited does it. Onky 700 miles but several times I'm halfway up my driveway (150ish feet) and hear the step shut. Passenger step didn't open at all when I started it at the same time she opened the door to get in.

This was exactly my issue as well with the running boards. Didn’t know about the TSB, I brought mine in at the beginning of May. They kept it for a week almost trying to figure it out, started getting a little firm with them and finally they went ahead and replaced the motor on the drivers side. So far ok.
