CarPlay Doesn’t Work if Too Hot

This is my second summer with my 19 Laramie and I think I can definitely say that CarPlay just does not work when it’s hot outside. I live in Phoenix and have a Black Truck with Black interior. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Sometime when I start the car it I will say some ridiculous temperature outside like 130 degrees. Once I start driving and have the pathetic AC going full blast it will eventually come back online but can sometimes take 30 minutes or more. Anyone else having issues with CarPlay while it’s hot outside or your truck sits in the sun?

Mine will act up sometimes, I just unplug it from one usb c port over to the other one and starts working again. It’s been hot and cold when it has happened, not sure what causes it.

That’s a weird one. No issues here in Fort Worth in the past 20 months. And only CarPlay is affected? Seems like your whole system would have issues if it were heat-related.

I noticed the screen gets really warm when on full brightness. I would recommend turning it down to half. That's what I did and my head unit stays significantly cooler.

I’ll give it a try. Unfortunately I only get to drive my truck about once every 2 weeks these days.

The brains of the operation don’t live in the screen. Head unit is several inches behind the screen.

Please let us know via private message if you decide to have your dealer look into this. We would like to have this documented and have a case escalated on your behalf so a Case Specialist can work with your dealer to help find a potential solution.

I was planning on calling the dealer but I wanted to check here to see how widespread this issue is. I have had 2 different 19 Rams and both have had this issue. I don’t want to waste my time with the dealer if there isn’t a known fix. Thanks.

@Dmalonecentral do you use some sort of interior windshield reflector to help keep the interior cooler?

I have one and I do use it when I remember but I don’t think that should be required for the vehicle to operate as intended. It does not always help me unless I also let the vehicle run to cool it down for 10-15 minutes before I remove it.

Yes, only CarPlay. It could be something with USB as well to the head unit because there seems to no power to the USB ports when the issue is happening. Other than that all other functions seem to work. Eventually once the vehicle is sufficiently cool it will just turn on. I have tried all USB ports 1-3 on both A and C ports.

I have the same issue here in Las Vegas. When the interior is hot, the Car Play does not connect to my iPhone. I can blue tooth it for music or phone calls. I have tried switching USB ports but it has no effect.

Thanks Bandit, have you sought out any solution?

I have not.. I have had the truck for a couple months and this just started in the last month since the temps got hot and was keeping an eye on the forums to see if someone posted on it.

A few members have had fried USB hubs; maybe that's a good place to start.

Bump on this issue. Called around to a few dealers and they all said they have not seen this issue, which I find hard to believe seeing as we live in Phoenix and I’ve had two 19 Rams with the same problem. Not really wanting my truck to be a guinea pig for some random issue that they have to troubleshoot. So in hopes of finding other people with this issue and a potential solution...bump.

FWIW, If asked if this is common or have they had any other vehicles with this same problem, I have never had a service writer ever answer me back with "Yes, happens all the time" or similar. I think it's scripted and coached to them to lie and say "No, not at all, you're the first one". I have a very good relationship with my dealer service/parts manager, and I sometimes get the truth from him, but not the writers. They all act oblivious to any common problems.

We had an issue with CarPlay not connecting a couple times, and now that I think of it, it was on the hottest days, days at the sunny beach, etc. only happened a couple times, it always after sitting in the sun...add me to the disaffected.

otherwise, love my 1500...

ps - I don’t know why folks are pineing for an all digital dash. Much rather have an analog tach...
