BEST Cap/Top out there...... RSI SmartCap ?

I had the cap installed a week ago, and was able to mount cross bars and a roof box a couple of days ago. Because the SmartCap was new, I was unable to find out what was needed to mount the bars in advance, so I had to go by trial and error once I got the box.

I used a Rhino Rack Vortex Aero System.

I used the following feet - https://www.etrailer.com/Roof-Rack/Rhino-Rack/RRRLT600H.html. Unfortunately the square nuts don't fit in the RSI tracks, and the only thing I could find that would were some oval nuts for a kayak mounting rail (best fit from a handful of options I tried were from MagiDeal on amazon). I would have preferred to use the Rhino Rack nuts, but at least the MagiDeal nuts are stainless and work with the Rhino Rack bolts. I will likely replace them when someone finds another solution.

I have the Vortex Aero 65 inch crossbars on the truck and they are absurdly wide (basically the width of the bed) and they look a little silly. Unless you are planning on putting multiple mounts on the bars, I would have gone with the 59, 54 or even 49 inch bars. The bars fit my Yakima Skybox 16 fine.

I did take a test drive up to about 80 mph any everything seems to be working and is quiet.

Got it Friday and installed today! This thing is very well built, worth every penny. Also did not receive the 3rd brake light wiring harness but they are sending it to me.

Does anyone know if RSI has designed an internal release handle (so you can camp in the back and open/close the back hatch from the INSIDE?

I am curious about how to modify the latches to be able to be released from the inside as well. I did not become aware of this issue until our first night in our Colorado backcountry camping trip back in September.

I've been meaning to post here for awhile now but here are a few pics of my setup that I had when I took my family to Colorado in September.

I have a sleeping platform that I repurposed from a pallet that my daughters playset came on. It was my first shot at building a platform and so I didn't want to buy good lumber with exception of the deck is a single sheet of plywood. I have 5 built-in storage compartments and we can have up to two wheeled totes that can slide in and out. On the right side of the platform can be used to hold larger items if need be. I have tried to insulate inside the cap from the heat radiating off the roof and I used 1" foam insulation board. It fits pretty nice in there. I have a few magnetic lights that I have attached to the doors and are usb rechargeable. I love these things because I can move them around wherever I need them on the cap. The Yakima basket on top is undersized for the truck but it was something I had originally got at an REI Garage Sale for our old Subaru Outback. Next to the basket is a WeBoost antenna which is a attached to a RAM mount on the crossbar. My goal here was to have the ability to stow the antenna when in the city or in height restricted situations. When the antenna is up and I'm driving over 40 mph, the antenna will start lower back down to the roof. I have seen Rhino Racks sells a foldable antenna mount but it's $$$. I have the wires from the WeBoost antenna and my rear dash cam routing into the cab of the truck from the right passenger side foot well. There is a plug I removed with a little heat and put in a place a waterproof RV solar panel wire feed thru. My next plans are to add a power panel to have access to USB/12v/110v outlets.

Are you using the existing threaded holes? It looks like you are. Do you know what thread it is to fit in there seamlessly?

The eye bolts attached to the nutserts on the underside off the roof panel are M6-12.

I saw a Ram Rebel with the SmartCap on it driving north on the 1. I was excited lol, first time I see the cap on truck in person on other than mines, and it turned out to be RAM as well

You would have to come up with a DIY solution if you wanted that. As of now you have to lock each lock individually. Maybe they will come out with something down the road though, thats the best part about this topper is that is module so you can always change things down the road.

Yes, I emailed RSI and they said the same thing. Said all 6 locks are keyed alike, so it's only one key.

That's a deal-breaker to me. I wouldn't mind keying open the side windows, for the number of times I would use them. But the tailgate--no. Way too convenient to lock/unlock with my key fob as opposed to TWO key maneuvers. I'll stick with my LEER for now...

No on the sides, but I don't really have a use for side access all the time anyway. Yes, the front window does fold in, for ease of cleaning.

You can technically drop it, but best practice is so have the rear window open when operating the tailgate.

In regards to side access, I honestly can't see myself without it. I rarely access anything from the rear. It's SO much easier to access the bed from the sides.

I drop my tailgate with the door closed and locked. It won't drop with the button press of the FOB since the seal is pretty tight, and technically it would probably wear down the seal I guess. I have the MFT so I find my self swinging open the back and accessing the back that way even when back door is locked. And the side access is awesome, I use it all the time, such a wide opening. I plan on ordering one of the storage containers for the driver side as well.

I don't know exactly, I could measure it for you, but I will say one of the main reasons I got the Cap was to regain some of that depth I lost with the drawer system. Its the perfect combo and setup, I love it.
