Bad fuel mileage 5.7 hemi

3rd fill-up. 1199 miles on the odometer. 14.7 average mpg.

My 2019 Laramie, 5.7 Hemi (not E-Torque) has 1400 miles so I don't consider it broke in. I'm getting 20 on the Interstate and about 18 - 18.5 around town.

Well, I can safely say that since doing my first oil change last week at 5600 miles, and switching to full synthetic (Pennzoil Platinum @ the dealer) - I have had a great improvement in mileage.

My commute is about 48 miles round trip, about 60/40 city/highway with periods of full stop traffic. I have made it through the week with 17.7 mpg, and this is with 3.92 gears, no e-torque (and thus no start/stop).

Since the oil change, the truck has been more willing to stay in MDS mode, even with light acceleration at highway speeds.

I went from 13-14 mpg, and using up a full tank between Monday and Friday, to being at just a hair below half a tank right now, from a full tank on Monday morning.

I'm only up to about 750 miles on mine, but I can't even get it to avg 14 with a good mix of highway and town. Hopefully will get better with age and it's been cold here in IA. Plus I've been just running the cheap 87 w/ethanol in it. 89 seems hard to find here so I might try a few tanks of 91 when I get some more miles on it.

Coz,
Well that is certainly the reason for the poor mileage, cold weather + low grade 87 octane (89 is minimally recommended) + winter blend unleaded (always reveals crap economy) = crap mileage

So, as of today, the wife and I decided to take a nice drive in Central Texas, specifically a 120 mile round trip to Lake Buchanan, which has a lot of rolling hills, curves, off camber blind turns and other scenic environments that are pleasing to anyone who enjoys the spacious and beautiful 19 Ram trucks. The speed limits on these country roads vary from 55-70mph. With that said, I decided to drive this truck as normal as the manufacturer suggests to include a light modification to my own driving style which is normal-to-spirited. I drove the entire route at the speed limit and with 90% of that in cruise control. I would say 50% of the trip was in eco-MDS mode which was mostly occurring between 55-65mph; the sweet spot for the MDS and the terrain I was circumventing. At the end of the trip, I'm happy to report, I averaged 20.6mpg with the best score @ 29mpg in MDS and 26mpg in non-MDS. The truck has 1700 miles on it with a 89-93 Shell/Valero mix respectively both of which are Top-Tier detergent fuels. May I suggest putting ONLY Top-Tier fuels in these Hemi's; the few extra cents will pay dividends every time.

I've been using TopTier fuels for a number of years now. I've been very pleased with how well they maintain engine performance. You don't even have to pay more for it, just shop wisely. One of the cheapest stations in my area is a Sinclair, which is TopTier.

I tried the 85 octane Regular here and it worked OK, but I noticed that the engine didn't make power as easily as when I used the 87 octane mid-grade. I didn't spend as much time in MDS on my regular commute as I do with mid-grade.

just got back from a 400 mile trip thru the mts of nothern Pa and only got 11 mpg hc .... oh btw, i was pulling a 7,000 # TT and the GCVW was 14,500 # CAT scaled
Slimchance,
Now that is some pretty darn good mileage with that excess baggage you were carrying. Nice!

2,561 miles on the truck so far, 17.755 AVG MPG calculated from the pump. Best so far was the last few days... mostly highway, but about 20 city miles of slow & stop/go around debris (tornado just came through) - averaged 21.317 MPG (but only over 112 miles since the last fill). Interestingly, the trip computer for those 112 miles only said 18.9 MPG, which matched fuel economy page 4 of the dash screen, but it was obviously much higher since I only used a little over 5 gallons for 112 miles.

Not to brag but... 1400 miles on the non-etorque hemi, 85% highway. It’s actually up to 23.6 now but the picture doesn't show that.

Just rolled over 5900 miles on my Big Horn. 4x4, 5.7. 3.92 rear. My average mpg is running from 18,7 to 20.3. I'm getting better mileage than the taco off road I traded for the Ram. Very pleased with the truck. Only one recall and that was the ORC reflash on the air bag shut down.

Good for the 3.92’s for sure.

Most recent 200 mile trip (1485 miles on truck) avg is 23.6, 85% highway at 60-65, some stop and go in small towns.

Well, here's an interesting tidbit for those of you wondering why your milage is terrible compared to others. I'm now strongly of the opinion that it's the individual truck, not the driver. My truck is in the shop to resolve a wind noise issue (which they acknowledge is definitely obnoxious, but can't find what's causing it), so I currently have a 2018 loaner that is also 4x4 and crew cab. I'm easily averaging 3.5+ mpg better doing the exact same commute. I immediately noticed that I had to give way less on the pedal. I went from averaging barely 16 mpg to just under 20mpg, on 50/50 highway city.

My truck is supposedly the same engine and transmission, yet more aerodynamic and 400+lbs lighter, but somehow gets worse milage? There's definitely something wrong. I've asked the dealer to update the PCM/TCM, which hopefully that makes a difference. I would be way happier getting 20mpg over the crap I've been getting so far.

Food for thought.

That is interesting, please keep us updated about the results of the reflash.

I'm getting horrible milage. I have just under 3,000 on my Limited with e-torque 5.7 with 3.92 gears. It started out getting between 15-17 with mixed highway and city driving. It has been progressively declining with no change in driving habits. My last fill up I got 10.2 MPG. Any ideas what could be happening? I use top tier premium 91 fuel, I drive like a grandma. Super frustrating.

150 miles Houston to Lake Charles, 21.5 mpg best milage to date, averaging 14-15 in city, 3.92 with 8 speed loses 1-3 mpg vs 3.21
