Hi folks,

I've got an issue (annoyance?) that I've tried getting information on, but doesn't seem to be anywhere and of course the dealer is useless. I have a 2025 Rebel, loaded with the Digital Rear View Mirror and the tow mirrors. All three mirrors have auto-dim capability. When driving around at night, the auto-dim almost never engages on any of the mirrors - regardless of whether it is in Digital mode or regular mode. But - when I hold a flashlight up to the rearview mirror (in both modes), all three will dim. So I know the dimming works, but for whatever reason the sensor inside of the mirror is not sensitive enough to engage at night. Which is annoying and kind of the point of the feature.

I'm wondering if this is happening to anyone else? Or any solutions?

Thanks!
Matt

It's possible the sensor on the mirror is bad. You could put a piece of black tape over the sensor on the front of the mirror. The mirrors should dim. You may need the headlights on too. Make sure there is nothing lighting up that sensor area. It will cause it to think it is still daylight.

Thanks Vincent - I tried that but no dice. I'll have to bring it in to see if they can get a new mirror, but before I made a big stink of it I wanted to make sure this wasn't a known issue

Quick update, brought it to the dealer, finally convinced them to put in a new DRVM. Still isn't working. Seems like this is going to be a challenge.

It doesn't dim just because it's dark. It dims when bright headlights hit it from behind. Do you have heavy window tint on your rear glass? I have factory tint, and my rear view mirror and both side mirrors auto dim wonderfully at night, don't know how I've driven all these years with standard outside mirrors. However the rear view auto tint mirror in my Ford Explorer seems to be lazy and not tint as dark or as frequently as my Ford F150 and Focus at night and I've replaced it as well. Could just be the dark tint or the angle of light hitting it.

Do your outside mirrors tint appropriately? Make sure you have the auto titan turned on under vehicle settings as well.

Coolzzy is correct...the sensor is basically the opposite of how the auto headlight sensor works. There needs to be a certain amount of light hitting the sensor for the auto dimming to activate. Its a common thing for it to not activate if the rear glass tint is too dark or if the headlights behind you arent bright enough or not at the correct angle.

Thanks @Ramintime . So does anyone else have this issue? I have DRVM + Tow Mirrors. I have stock tint on the rear windows. No tint or anything on the front windshield. We tested it at the dealer with another car behind the truck, in various distances, and it never once dimmed. Hold a flashlight up to it, all three mirrors dim no problem.

As I mentioned, I replaced the mirror itself under warranty at the dealer, and still no change. I had a 2014 and a 2019 1500 with a dimming rearview mirror (never a digital one), and never had this issue before!

I don't know on the DRVM because mine is retrofitted and doesn't support dimming. But that's been 0 issues as no headlights have ever been bright enough to overwhelm the video. It's never blinded me. The side mirrors on the other hand.

Have you tried shinning a flash light at the side mirrors?

That is strange behavior if a flashlight will cause the mirrors to Dim. However on my Ford Explorer it behaves the same way. Lights have to be just the right brightness and usually only happens on the highway but a flashlight will dim it super quick. My Ram dims all three mirrors with very little effort. In fact when I back out of the garage into the sunlight, the mirrors are all dimmed.

On an unrelated note, did you say you have tow mirrors and they dim, on both sides? I've got the standard mirrors with blind spot and really want to swap them out for the tow mirrors but was afraid of losing the auto dim feature.

Thanks everyone. Yes, the DRVM itself isn't really the issue for dimming, but the enormous tow mirrors can be totally blinding with another car behind. Which is especially frustrating because they can dim (to answer your question @Coolzzy). But the sensor to activate the dimming is in the DRVM... which seems dumb to me, but it is Stellantis. I think I have a relatively rare combination of the DRVM + tow mirrors, so not sure how many other folks will have experienced this.

I stopped by the dealer today, and the service manager had opened up a ticket with Ram Engineering. I'll keep you posted on what they come back with (not holding my breath here).

Try driving it at night with the rear window open (if it does) and see if it changes anything. If so, it's the tint.

Hi there, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Please send our team a private message for an extra layer of support alongside the dealer.
