It will be the rear end gear ratio. 3.92 will give much higher tow capacity vs 3.21
Thanks that is what I was thinking so I in theory change out the rear end with a new 3.92 and it would bump my truck up to the 11,650 area of towing capacity.
I am wanting to upgrade my RV but not have to buy a new truck also new RV is 10,300 lbs.

You will run out of payload long before you can carry the tongue weight of a 10k+ pound RV. You need a 2500 or 3500 for that weight.

**unless you get a bare bones truck with close to max payload.

No 3.92 won’t help you

You will need to upgrade to a 2500/3500 truck if you want a 10k lb RV

7-8k loaded RV will easily max out a 1500 truck’s payload

Thanks I was afraid that would be the case the RV is a fifth wheel so hitch weight is probably going to be more than payload true

Typically, it is rear end, trim level and fuel tank size that affects towing capacity. 3.92 gets the best towing capacity however the higher trim levels (Longhorn/Limited) eat away at this as Tradesman/Big Horn/Lone Star give the best, and 26 versus 33-gallon fuel tanks - you're hauling more weight with the larger tank.

17000 minus 11650 equals 5350

7100 minus 5350 equals 1750.

10300 fifth wheel...is this GVWR or Base weight?

Lets say it is GVWR

10300 at 20%pin weight...2060

You see the issue.

You need to haul 2060 lbs of pin weight with only 1750lbs of payload.

Fantastic!!! Thanks for fact checking that what I said is 100% accurate!
The way you wrote that was intended to convey that there is a big weight difference between trim levels. In reality it’s so minimal when optioned the same that it’s really not that important.

Only difference between these two trucks is Limited has air-suspension and the BH has bed cover, which ends up a wash weight-wise.

What part of "Tradesman/Big Horn/Lone Star give the best" do you fail to comprehend? I was very clear and your post above proves it - AGAIN! Tradesman/Big Horn/Lone Star give the best towing capacity. Again, thanks for validating my statement and now with graphics. You're just the best!

Are those payload numbers matching the door sticker though? My bighorn is very well equipped for a bighorn, and I have 1750 pounds of payload. And all the limiteds I've seen in this forum seem to be south of 1300.

I haven‘t come across a truck where the door sticker & website number didn’t match. These are trucks I looked at back when I was shopping for mine.

As noted, the 3.92 ups the overall towing capacity by quite a lot over the 3.21, and is the biggest factor but every bell and whistle that is on there takes away from your capacity. Ramboxes, barn door, panoramic sunroof, keep adding stuff and down goes your rating AND your payload the more important of the two numbers. There are some out there with as little as 1,000 lbs "payload." Even adding 4X4 over 4X2 does it. My short bed 4X4 has quite a bit on it WITH a 3.21 and I'm at 8K "total" and 1300 payload.

3.21 is 13900 GCWR
3.92 is 17000 GCWR.

There is a 3100 lb difference.

Note: with payload as the limiting factor...most of the time when talking about travel trailers/5th wheels...the 3100 extra pounds is usually no existent in actual use.

I'm obviously missing something; here is my sticker and my door jamb, why do I have another 150 pounds?
