HOW TO: Add Digital Rearview Mirror

Well, I installed the mirror (68519222AA) the other day in my 2019 DT and made a bracket to mount the camera (68448640AA) on the rear glass of my Leer Topper.

I can plug into the existing harness for my Dimming Mirror with Auto High beams and the Mirror powers on properly with the key. I Also used the dongle I showed earlier and it works fine too.

So, my question is what am I missing by not using the BCM?

I did run into cable length issues using RG174. After about 20 feet or so the signal loss kicks off the camera. I think I may make a RG314 and see if it is better.

This is concerning since the second input for the trailer I ran to the rear as well and I'm assuming that if I add additional cable for the length of the trailer It'll drop the signal due to loss.
Any pictures of the bracket you made? I’ve been contemplating doing the same.

Any info about that adapter? Like a link to it? It must send the same signal that the BCM does.

Here is the bracket.

My adapter came with the mirror I purchased from Robert over at Truck Reboot.

Honestly from what I can tell about the adapter it's just taking power and ground from the vehicle plug and adding a switched ignition output to it for the mirror. My truck has the dimming mirror with auto high beams and was already pined out this way along with a LIN Bus wire.

I could be wrong but that's what it looks like to me.

Thanks! Curious if you maintained these features after the swap with this adapter, as they have been traditionally lost when completing this upgrade?

The adapter just seems to power the mirror.

The version of the video mirror I have doesn't have the High beam camera on it. I have thought about removing it from the original dimming mirror and adding it to the video mirror. However, the high beam camera has a ribbon strip to send info into the dimming mirror. I was planning on opening the dimming mirror up to remove the video screen I had formed over the original mirror. I remember there being a circuit board in the dimming mirror that was easy to access, because I had to route the video cable for the screen by it to go out the post hole in the back of the mirror. I'll look to see if this could be transferred in some way.

The adapter is doing more than just providing power. Power is already there for the mirror. Do you have a link to the adapter or where you bought the mirror?

I’m thinking it must be this:
If that’s the case, there’s no need to worry about a spare bcm and harness anymore, since that thing takes care of the necessary Lin messages.

@DFWCook, on your two channel mirror, when you have the tow mode camera plugged in and displaying, does the image automatically pan downwards when you put the truck in reverse?

I don't see how because I can unplug this adapter cable and plug the video mirror straight into the OEM harness and it works correctly.

That comment doesn't make any sense. So, if it works without the adapter (doubtful), then why use it?

I didn't get the one from eBay but it looks identical to what I have. Mine came from Robert at Truck Reboot.

I currently have only had one camera connected; the second camera was on backorder. I did notice that the mirror image seems to go up and down while driving forward in traffic. I assume this is to center the image while moving, no real sure.

My second camera arrived today so I might be able to test for that.

That's why I was asking what the BCM does for the mirror.

Because when I first was testing it, I didn't seem to need the adaptor for it to work, nor did I see a traditional CAN BUS or LIN BUS signal going to the mirror for function after metering the adaptor. I'm not saying it doesn't create a LIN BUS signal for the yellow wire but 12volts seems a bit odd for a LIN BUS voltage.
