New info on Gas tank fueling issue

On my last visit to the dealer I complained about how when filling the gas tank the pump will stop a million times if you try to fill up at the highest speed (or any speed really). They ordered me a new tank and the service advisor told me the order was canceled by RAM. He reordered the tank and that order was canceled too so he called to ask why the order kept getting canceled and he was told they are not fulfilling orders for gas tanks and that they have redesigned the fuel tank. After Jan 22nd he will be able to order the newly designed tank that fixes this issue. I am glad he told me this because I know there are people here with the same issue I have and its part of the 7 yr 70k warranty so most of you that have this issue will get the replacement free of charge.

It was awful with my 2019 but never had a single occurrence in my 2021. I figured it was part of the "1st year of a new body style" issue list.

I have a 2020 ram 1500 limited. After owning the truck for 18 months the gas tank started not accepting gas. I was 400 miles from home and had to continually squeeze the handle until it clicked. It didn’t matter what speed the gas was going in that it would sound like the neck would fail and it would click off. I took it to Ram and told them what was going on and they ordered me a new gas tank. Two weeks later I brought the truck in for them to replace the gas tank and after having the truck there all day they called me at 4:30 a half hour before they closed to tell me they ordered the wrong gas tank. ( I have the 33 gallon guest tank) then they ordered the correct gas tank and I didn’t hear anything from them after two weeks so I called them and of course they told me the gas tank came in that day. I scheduled another date to drop the truck off to have the gas tank replaced and I told them they weren’t going to keep it two days like they had on the first occasion. I started calling them at 3 o’clock to make sure it would be done before I got a ride to the dealership which is about 25 miles away. They finally told me to come on down and it’ll be done. About 5 miles from the dealership they called me and asked me if it was too late for me to turn around and go home because the tank was in but they were getting a error code that said “imminent gas tank leak detected.” I told him it was too late since somebody was dropping me off and continuing further away from my house. They told me that they would send me to on the block to get a rental car and I refused. I told him I want my truck back and I will bring it back for that issue. they showed me that the tank was not leaking but The check engine light might come on. Which I did not. So when the coming weeks I’m going to make an appointment to bring the truck in for them to check out what’s causing the area code and I told them I will be waiting for the truck and I want it done quickly. This will be the third time I’m bringing the truck in to solve the gas tank problem.

Pretty sure it is for 2021 so 2022 should be fine.

I have a 33 gallon in my 21. I occasionally come across a pump that will cut out. I back the nozzle out a bit and the trouble goes away.

I've had this "problem" with many vehicles - my 2012 Titan did it, my 2018 Challenger does it, my 2022 Ram does it, heck, even my 1964 Beaumont does it. And the answer lies in high fueling rate versus ability of the gas filler tube to accept fuel. And the solution is not new parts, it is patience, either adjusting the direction of fuel flow like MW says, or just backing off of full speed a bit.

I've occasionally run into this with my 19, but moving the pump nozzle around a bit usually takes care of it. Doesn't happen frequent enough for me to want to have the tank replaced.

We now have "California" nozzles at costco in Georgia. They are more finicky than normal nozzles. I've never had a problem with my 33 gal tank.

I have had a ton of different cars over my many years and you are right, some do need a little more attention than others when fueling but with this truck the speed, angle, pump type and any other parameter you can think of do not apply. This particular tank has some acknowledged defect that forced a redesign and this my friend is confirmation that there is indeed something wrong with it.

Really, I have not paid attention to the size of the tanks in threads with people having this issue.

I have a 33 gallon and occasionally have an issue. Like I said, I just back it out a little and it takes care of it.

I wonder if tank size has anything to do with it. Are the fill necks the same in all tanks?

Interesting issue. I previously had an 09 and after several years owning it every time I filled it up it would overfill and spill out. Not a ton, maybe 6 ounces but it was certainly annoying and had to clean gas off the paint every time I filled up. Didn't matter if the nozzle was fully inserted, slightly out, full speed, slowest setting, holding the trigger by hand slowly. I would have to try to listen to when it was almost full and just stop it myself was the only thing that helped. Hopefully this issue with the newer rams doesn't develop into a similar issue.

2021 with 33gal here. Filled up at Costco last Saturday. I had to hold the nozzle to fill up. IIRC, I had to hold the nozzle everytime I filled up at Costco ($0.30 cheaper than anywhere else around here).

I took a road trip Thanksgiving weekend, from NJ to Montreal. I didn't have any problems at the pumps in upstate NY and Canada.

I have this issue with my 2021 Bighorn. It doesn't happen at every pump, but more often than not I have to fanagle is a little bit after a gallon or so. It is pretty annoying, especially now that it is getting colder out. I would like to get this fixed if there is a new design. For those of you who have gotten it fixed, is it a pretty easy process? I have never done anything with a vehicle warranty before.

Also, I have a 23 gallon tank and I have to fill it up like every 3rd day. Do you think if they would replace it, I could pay the difference for a bigger tank?

I have a 2021 and only have an issue with one particular gas station in town. If I forget to slow the fill speed, it either cuts out too often or only fills to just past 3/4s of a tank (and I never notice until I pull away).
