Who else’s new RAM looks like this underneath?

I crawled under our new 2021 RAM 1500 North edition today after returning from vacation to see if I could locate the annoying, occasional rattle that seems to only happen at low speed. It had 241 miles on it when purchased at the end of April and now has just over 1,200 miles on it. While under there, I was shocked to see the crappy “paint job” that RAM did on my $50+k truck. Pretty pathetic if ya ask me. Plus I noticed where paint is scraped down to the bare metal on the underside of the cab. I bet when I buy my next new truck, I will crawl under it and not accept something like this. A man shouldn’t have to crawl underneath a brand new truck to look for flaws.

That’s my thoughts. What a way to retain a Chevy guy. I’m gonna contact RAM about it. The day I bought the truck it was raining and I had to get home to go to work, so I didn’t climb underneath it. Again, why would one think that they should need to climb underneath a brand new truck?

This has been discussed in other threads. I crawled under mine before I signed anything and saw that the paint completely covers the rear end. I've seen pics of all three US brands that had no paint on the rear ends. It's not just Ram. I'd probably just clean up the surface rust and paint it myself if my truck looked like yours. Evidently a lot of dealerships say it's normal and refuse to do anything about it.

Live and learn I guess. The next truck I buy I’ll be crawling under it with a mirror and lights. It’s just downright disgusting that the big 3 automakers skimps on stuff like this while charging astronomical prices for their products. I doubt that it will affect anything other than looks (and my ocd), but darn it I bought a new truck so I wouldn’t have to do any work to it. This relationship with RAM is getn off to a rocky start

It almost looks as if the rear end assembly was laying out in the weather in a junk yard before being installed in my truck. The rear end assembly in my 2002 Silverado doesn’t look this crappy.

We have two 2020 Rams in the family. I had the same thing on the Lone Star but the Laramie was and is still perfect. I purchased two cans of Rustoleum high temp black paint and a ton of fluid film. I hit the entire rear end with a wire brush and then went to town with the spray paint. A day later I hit it all, as well as the entire undercarriage, with Fluid Film. It looked better than new after that and has held up like new. This is the first Ram I’ve ever had look like that in 35 years of Ram ownership. Damned shame but all is fine now.

Thanks for the info. I’ll probably have to do the same I don’t blame the dealer, I blame RAM. The dealer had me sign a paper saying that I was receiving a truck in perfect condition. Nothing is ever perfect...idk why I signed that. But again, I don’t blame the dealer.

Which fluid film did you get? And did you use gloss, satin, or flat rustoleum?

My 2020 Laramie Longhorn was perfect as well. Had it for 15 months, it's never once been back to the dealer. Zero complaints.

Although I do understand the OP's distress, Ford got in a lot of trouble just last year for the same thing. It's a shame the OP got one that wasn't properly inspected, though, I do hope the truck is otherwise good.

Wow! I know Ford has this problem now... Their rust issue is really bad with the new F150s...
As soon as I saw Ford owners complaining about bad coating with their trucks, I had to check mine... And it looks flawless after more than 2 years..

quite the differences there! one truck looks like they were drunk during assembly that day, the others look like they should. fingers crossed for my factory order. these threads give me a lot to think about upon delivery of my truck.

I'm thinking this is COVID related. Short staffed, high demand. They're cutting corners on QC/QA. My 2020 was built May 2020 and purchased in Aug 2020. Looks brand new underneath. I am thinking issues like that came in later build dates. Shame on them.

In either case, would be a good idea to power wash and spray with some flat Rust-Oleum or Fluid Film. 3M used to produce a fantastic under coating that came in a spray can. Haven't had the need in years so not sure if it still is available.

I live where the roads are heavily salted and pre treated with the liquid in the winter. The truck was built Sept 2020. I’m not happy about this at all. Plus idk how that scrape got on the underside of the cab. I was always a RAM/Mopar hater and finally decided to give them a try and this is what I get. I had honestly hoped that this truck would make me eat every anti Mopar word that I’ve ever said, but so far things like this I’m discovering isn’t helping with that lol.

35 years of Ram ownership and have never had those issues…seems to be random for owners with the exception of the 2019 Rams which they’ve got a TSB to fix (which should have never occurred but some brain dead FCA engineer failed to recheck his slide rule calcs/system design to ensure the temps blowing out the vents were 45 degrees and not 75 degrees).
