2020 Ram 1500 Limited and Longhorn Headlight redesign?

Oh I thought maybe you had done the swap from Laramie front end to the Longhorn one. :)

OK, so after owning my truck for 4.5 months and not driving at night, I drove it last night to a friend of mine's house about a mile away. My my, those headlights are bright! They seemed a good 20+% brighter than my 2015 F-150 headlights, which were also LED. I couldn't tell if the adaptive/curve assist part was working, but I guess they were.

Can't wait to take the truck on a road trip - usually we pack the family into my truck and go at night so the kids sleep the majority of the way.

New led headlights are my favorite. Our head view is so clear and the visual angle is wider than the old halogen lamps

Does anyone else get flashed by on coming cars sometimes with just the regular low beams on? I think the lights are so bright on the Limiteds that they think your high beams are on. Doesn't happen a lot but it happens to me every once in a while. I would flash them back but don't want to burn their retinas out with the high beams!

Nope (even though they seem bright to me). And in tests, the Ram design was shown to produce less glare than the competition. Bright is fine if it’s well-focused.

You guys make me want to take my truck out tonight after dark! I've only had it 4.5 months and I don't think I've ever driven it at night, so I have no idea how bright the headlights are.

They are insanely bright. I though my Jeep SRT had good lights. These blow them out of the water.

Regardless of competition the 2019 adaptive LEDs had the worst rating out of the 2019 RAM lineup and was the biggest failure in testing. The 2020 adaptive LEDs were redesigned to directly address the glare issue cited.

Ram has revised the adaptive LED headlights to meet performance requirements for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award.


"And then there are the headlights. The base halogen reflector headlights received the second-lowest rating of Marginal due to inadequate coverage on curves. The LED reflector headlights on higher trims were also rated Marginal based on inadequate curve coverage and low-beam glare. The LED projector headlights on the most expensive trims fared even worse, receiving a Poor rating for creating excessive glare. Had any set of headlights on the 2019 Ram 1500 been rated Acceptable, the Ram 1500 would have been eligible for the IIHS' Top Safety Pick accolade. Had those headlights received a Good rating, the truck would have received the highest honor, Top Safety Pick+. Currently only one large pickup -- the 2018-2019 Honda Ridgeline -- has a Top Safety Pick designation.

It would be cool to know what changed and if FCA is going to retrofit older RAMs.

They actually put a slight bend in the light path of the driver side lens to allow for less glare for oncoming traffic.

Here is the exact text of my response that my link provided above jumps to (which was followed by a response from Neurobit, incidentally, not you):

“Good info. Looking over the IIHS info, it appears the original adaptive LEDs performed BETTER than the revised late 2019-2020 design (from the driver’s perspective) in left curves, but at the expense (as you pointed out) of creating glare for oncoming drivers.”

If you go back and read the report, you’ll notice that the revised headlights perform exactly the same as the originals, except that they perform poorly in left curves, whereas the originals performed better (in terms of throwing light). However, as has been pointed out, the originals also created glare in left curves for oncoming drivers, which was a black flag for the IIHS in terms of their overall rating. So Ram cut off the headlight output in that direction (earning a poor score to the left) in order to reduce glare and receive a higher overall rating.

Hence my original comment that the original design performs better from the driver’s perspective, but at the expense of glare to oncoming drivers in left curves. Make sense now?

That's interesting. It would be interesting to look at a truck with the original headlights vs the modified lights to see which light up the road better.
According to IIHS, the originals light up the road better, but produce more glare too (around left curves).

My 2020 Laramie Longhorn lights are great. I usually keep fog lights on and the road and sides of the road are very well lit. They move into the turns also which is a nice feature.

I just got my 2020 Laramie 3500 and I dont have these lights like I did on my 2500. So upset.

Can’t understand why this would not be available on the 3500s. FCA makes some head-scratching decisions sometimes, don’t they?

From what I'm hearing from other customers, the directional headlights that I had on my 2019 2500 Laramie are only available on the 2020 longhorn and limited. Just like the panoramic sunroof we couldn't get because it's only available on the 1500.

Just another way for them to force you into a higher trim level for that one feature you want, but make you pay for a whole slew of features you don't want to get them. I wanted the advanced safety group on my Laramie mainly for the speed sensitive cruise control, but I did not want the level 2 equipment group, but you can't get the advanced safety group at 1700 dollars without first spending 4900 dollars to get level 2 equipment.

From what I'm hearing from other customers, the directional headlights that I had on my 2019 2500 Laramie are only available on the 2020 longhorn and limited. Just like the panoramic sunroof we couldn't get because it's only available on the 1500.

Exactly this... I will upgrade to a 2500 when they offer the pano roof, adaptive headlights, full air suspension, as well as move the shark fin to the back center which I think looks stupid up front on the 2500 and 3500 currently :rolleyes: When I get a chance to sit in a 2500 or 3500 I am curious about what else isn't available that is on the 1500 Limited?
