No CD player in my 2020 1500

Won’t work. I tried it. Format on CDs is AIF or something and system doesn’t recognize the files. Music on CDs need to be converted to MP3.

Thanks for the pic. I was not imagining anywhere near that small. I guess the actual open area does match up very tightly with a notebook-grade optical drive. Had no idea Ram shoehorned it in there like that.

I'm thinking they had tons in stock, ran them on the 2019s till they ran out. I had one in my 2014 which was option. It was under console lid. Never used it. Haven't used the one in 2019 which is 15 months old

On the thumb drive I created folders and put the MP3s inside the folders. I also named the files. The truck didn’t recognize the folders or the file names. Is there something I need to do in the way of formatting the thumb drive so the folders and file names are recognized?

It is storage. The cover is expensive to open, but it does open really, really quickly.

That's because you can't just throw folders/files into a thumb drive. It's needs to be formatted correctly (m3u format) for it to work.
I'm on a Mac also. Use the app below. It's just a few bucks and works great. Your vehicle will recognize all the playlists and you'll be able to browse amongst them, etc.

I tossed a CD in mine to test it out. I found the LED that stays on when a CD is in the drive distracting, so I unloaded it.

If the plan was to have an LED to indicate a CD in the player, they should have chosen a different color from the transmission and drive-train indicators. It also doesn't need to be as bright and large as FCA made it.

The infotainment system supports FLAC if you want lossless audio. I also supports AAC, WAV (I think), and maybe a few other file types.

(Pedantry: CD tracks aren't really files, they're PCM-encoded audio data streams. Macs do show them as AIFF files, though.)

Lol I’m 26 and still buy CDs. It’s just too bad Best Buy stopped carrying them! CDs are without a doubt a better use of our premium sound systems. Bluetooth creates lower-resolution audio because it carries less sonic information. Typically muddles, distorts and dampens/lessens sound. Even the difference of Bluetooth vs wired I notice within a few minutes of driving.

I remember about a year ago when I bought my other car, I brought my case of CDs. The salesperson asked what I was intending on doing with them. I said I was going to give them a rotation once I left the lot. He said not in this car lol. Alfa Romeo/Maserati stopped with them altogether a couple years ago. At least with RAM we still have the option.

And even better yet, SACDs (Super Audio CDs) are very capable and coveted by audiophiles. Of course Hybrid SACDs have better player compatibility.

I was able to play back WMA lossless files, sounded very good.

I don't get why anyone would object to having the player in there. As seen from the pictures, the cubby is barely big enough to use, if you have CDs you can play them, and if/when you go to sell the next person might want to have a CD player and it's just one more sales advantage.

If you don't like or have CDs, just ignore it!

What size is the drive? I read on another thread that the larger thumb drives come with a different default format. I have a small 16GB thumb drive that is formatted in FAT32 and it's worked great. I'm not sure what the larger ones are formatted in or if FAT32 is an option with larger drives (I know FAT32 only supports up to a certain storage size).

I've also read that even though file names can be 255 characters that after a certain length (file in a folder in a folder in a...) the truck has a hard time reading it. I have everything no more than one folder deep (I don't need 1000's of songs ready to go) and have had no issues.

SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 64GB Mini Nano USB

The big deal about it is that its so small it doesn't stick out (only the black part sticks out of the usb slot) so there is little chance my knee will hit it and break the thing off or ruin the slot.

Well, how disappointing. When ordering the 2020, there was no online build app. So I just ordered everything as I built out the 2019. I was not told and not sure the dealer even knew.

But I was fiddling around with the center console and noticed a small cubby space above the phone charging pad.

Then I realized that’s where the CD player is supposed to be. Now I’m wondering if that was something I had to order and the dealer didn’t tell me. WHAT!? I’m pissed.

hey diamondmi I actually spent the last 7 years working for an FCA dealership (up in canada) and I can tell you that the way the factory decides to build your truck is not always how it is ordered. I was involved in new vehicle inventory ordering and we can order almost anything and its completely up to the factory at the time to build, to determine if the parts you want will go in the vehicle. its incredibly frustrating as a dealer. FCA puts special parts on "restriction" frequently. things like ramboxes, sunroofs, sport hoods and air suspension systems are often "not available" to be used in building and will be left out of the build sheet. there are various reasons for this such as non compliance, recall issue, limited availability/popular option. the WORST part about it is, the dealer will never find out until after the vehicle is built and invoiced. I dont work for this dealership anymore so I am not sure if this has changed (doubtful as its been this way for 40 years with FCA) but CD players have really gone extinct to bluetooth and streaming services. its just a reality. im actually shocked that my DT truck has a CD player.

I'm coming from a 2003 Ford with an in-dash 6 CD changer and no AUX port so I've been a CD guy up until now. I was still listening to them for the first couple of months after I got the truck until I decided to take advantage of the new technology I bought and converted over to a thumb drive.

My streaming sounds good and sounds a lot better since I got a better cable to connect to the truck for Car Play but is still not as good as accessing my music via a thumb drive.

While all my inputs are acceptable, I have the base 6 speaker system so any advantage I can get helps it sound better so I usually use the thumb drive to listen to music (if I'm not listening to the radio or XM). If I had the Alpine system I might think differently.
