Loud Noise on Startup

Last time I do this: I press the brake and press the start button. As soon as the dashboard lights up, I completely remove my foot from the pedal. The engine starts, there are no any clanks.
Same here. Mine hasn't done it for weeks and it used to do it at least once a day.

I am experiencing this same issue. I have the truck at the dealership today for an oil change and safety recall. I would like to feel at ease one way or another. I told the dealer about the noise which was heard in the bay service area today.

Checking in to see if anyone is having the same issue I'm having. On startup, I would say 7-8 out of 10 times, there is this really loud noise! My wife even commented on it...she said that does not sound normal! I haven't recorded it yet. Anyone else having this issue???
Mine does the same. But with less frequency. Very erratic. Sometimes 2 in a row then maybe 1 in 20 starts. Mine sounds like a metallic clank and I'm guessing it's in the exhaust system. I have asked the dealer crew at oil change time but no response. They probably couldn't get it to do it. Another oil change coming this week and will ask again.

If I remember to keep a light foot on the brake when starting, I never hear the clank. If I don't, it's hit or miss

My 19' Ram Rebel has 12,500 miles on it and I've had it over one year. 50% of the time during start, mine makes that insane metal clank sound. Wow. I've owned 4 Rams and this one is the first to do it. It gets everyone's attention and it's embarrassing. Of course, I still have that awful noise cancelling 'droning' noise that comes and goes when it wants. Even after being at the dealer for this issue twice.

Have you tried experimenting with how you apply the brake for startup? My hasn't had the clank at all since I started just lightly pressing the brake when I hit the start button and then immediately let off.

Proud new member of the 2019 Ram club. Not even two weeks old yet.

Unfortunately, also a member of the "loud clank at start-up club."

I tried reading 250 posts before work but there doesn't seem to be a diagnosis yet (150 posts so far). Will the next 100 posts have better news?

At least as me to the club. Misery loves company.

Haven't seen a diagnosis yet, but @MaxKZ seems to be onto something with this post:

Hello from Kazakhstan. 1st of all, sorry for my english.

I've bought 2019 RAM REBEL at Dec,18. I hear this "startup-knocking" from the beginning of RAM use. Now it has 4000km of mileage.
My observations suggest that:
1. The sound happens at the start when PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL ONLY.
2. With a remote start there is no sound.

I found the following solution for this feature and I'm using this way and reccomend it for you all:
If you want to start engine by push-start and don't want to hear this unpleasant sound:
WHEN STARTING, DON'T DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL STRONGLY - JUST TOUCHING IT LIGHTLY. (IF THE VEHICLE STANDS UNDER THE STAFF, ENSURE THAT THE PARKING BRAKE IS ACTIVATED)

I have not heard this sound for 2 weeks when I start the engine with a lightly pressed brake pedal.

p.s.:
My answer your early question:
The reason that the sound happens 2or3or4 times of 10 is only that these times you are harder on the brake pedal. that's all!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Mine also started doing it. Loud clunk, then a metal rattle afterwards. Definitely doesn’t sound normal.

There IS something to it. MaxKZ is a GENIUS. I haven't had the clank and metal rattle since I have followed the advice in his post (probably close to a month now). I can replicate it now if I desire just by the brake pedal pressure. I still think the clank and rattle is the parking pawl when you mash on the brake.

I have a 06/ 24/19 build and have heard this once in my 3 weeks of ownership. so obviously the saga continues and probably when the 2020's roll out it will surface with them as well.

So is this a normal thing? Or a cause for concern? Took it into the dealer today and they told me all their rams on the lot are having some sort of rattling on startup. Even the owners Ram rattles a bit and pretty much told us we’re crazy. I guess there hasn’t been enough complaints for a recall or TSB?

My 13 did the same thing, check the exhaust manifold studs. My guess is it's coming from the driver side? My 13 went in for the studs 3 times and everyone else I know with a 13 to 16 had the same issue.

It started off quiet and got worse as more studs broke, and it really was loud on cold starts until 4 of them broke.

New to the forum, new to dodge, I was previously a ford owner, just bought the brand new 2019 ram 1500 LARAMIE I have 800 miles on it. At the risk of making this sound like an alcoholics anonymous group I too am experiencing this clunk or bang or whatever you want to call it. To me it's more like metal on metal like starter teeth binding on something. It happens randomly and not very often but often enough to notice. I tried a couple of times to record the noise but no luck. Just wondering if anyone has come up with anything, I read about half the thread before posting and heard a couple of videos but none that sounded exactly like what I'm hearing. I have an appointment on the 19th with dealer on some minor exterior issues but I want to gather as much evidence as possible to have to take to dealer when I go. Thanks!

Hey y'all, I have been videoing some of my start-ups (when I remember to) and I got the "clank" captured finally ...

"video or it didn't happen"

THANK YOU! I too have this loud “clunk” brand new truck.... :( I switched from Chevy and already have an issue... it’s really disappointing. Video doesn’t even convey how loud this clunk is. It’s VERY EMBARRASSING. People look at me thinking I hit something when starting the truck. You would think Ram would be all over this so their trucks aren’t out there clunking all over the place. It looks, sounds, bad for the brand...
