Here's my dilemma. Was on the fence about purchasing the new Rebel so the dealer let me take the truck overnight to seal the deal. Well, that tactic worked. haha but on my way back to the dealer, I stopped to fill up the tank. Started it up, switched from Park to Drive and nothing. Put it back to Park then Drive and still nothing. Gave it some gas and slammed into gear. Truck only has 100 miles on it.... didn't think much of it at the time. Thought one tire might have been in a pothole. Long story short, we agreed to numbers last night but I didn't sign any papers. Got home and did some searching and found out this Park to Drive is a REAL issue. Sounds like FCA still does not know the exact cause so..... with that being said, do i push for a new transmission before I sign papers? They did say there was a software update the vin was showing (not sure if it's related to this). Thoughts?

I personally wouldn’t take that truck. Too much of a risk. Could be a software update, could need a new tranny. Might not do it every time so if they flash the software and you drive off the lot thinking it’s ok, now it’s your problem to deal with if it starts happening. If it were me I would say you will honor the deal if they locate you another Rebel. That’s my opinion.

Dealer just called back and stated the flash update they did was regarding the park/drive issue. Thoughts on asking for another overnight test drive to see if it happens again? From the sound of it, the flash update may or may not work from what all you guys are saying

Open up a case with ram customer service and/or ramcares. Document everything. Get video of it if you can. Get to the dealership. Get a loaner. Start the clock. Most of all, be careful.

Ended up buying the truck even after the park/drive issue during the overnight test drive. Have just over 300 miles now and hasn't happened again. Hopefully the software was the issue. Worst case scenario, I'll have to do the reverse, park, then drive workaround to keep going. If that fails, then gas it and let it dump into drive and tell Ram i need a new trans. Can't imagine it working like new after doing that a dozen+ times. : )

If this helps: My truck, a rebel, has a november 2018 build date, and doesn't seem to do it. I haven't looked at the odometer but I'm about 7000miles in I think!
If that truck kinda scares you, make them get you a different one.
If they want your business they might oblige.

Edit: Kept reading and just saw you got it! No problem and good luck! if it has an issue, they'll make right

Has anyone resolved this issue with a software update?

Had the issue during the test drive. Rebel only had 130 miles at that time. The dealer did the software update, I purchased the truck the next day and here i am at almost 500 miles and haven't had the issue again. I'll be putting on a lot of miles over the next few weeks so I'll keep you guys posted if it happens again.

Has anyone resolved this issue with a software update?

I purchased my truck on 6/18 and have experienced the Park/Drive issue 6 times so far. Every time though the truck would go into drive either by going to reverse and then to drive or by gently pushing on the gas. At between 1000 and 1200 rpm the truck would then go into drive with a lunge.

After reading this thread, I opened a case with FCA to hopefully help with this as in Ohio, the dealer has one chance to fix an issue that could cause injury or death and I had this on video and no one at the dealer could believe it did that. I had my truck at the dealer yesterday and I got it back today. They could replicate the problem but felt it was not a transmission problem They ran diagnostics on the transmission and everything came back as it should. They then found a software update that was for trucks having this kind of problem. The update was for the park assist sensors. Supposedly there was a bug in the current software that was letting the front park assist to lock the brakes and not let the truck shift into drive because it was reporting something in front of the truck. This would explain why shifting into reverse and back into drive would clear this out. At times, there was also a "boing" sound that was like someone hitting a gong when the brake was pushed to start the truck. This was possibly the brake system being activated due to the sensor issue.

Sure have my fingers crossed that this solves the problem and hope that maybe this might point some others on here to a solution. I'll update this post timely for anyone interested in if this solved the problem.

Great news for you BuckeyeKev! Do you happen to have a software revision number on your invoice that you'd be willing to share? I'm certain that my situation is software related, not mechanical.

No idea if these are the software numbers or code numbers for the job:
7280 WJ4
388 0.20
1820059J

Wonder how many other people here that have this problem have the park assist package?

Add me to the list. Brand new truck started on day one. Dealer has had the truck a full week. I do have park assist package. Will open a case with FCA to see if national support can help to resolve.
