19 Ram 5.7 engine using too much oil. Ended up getting new engine under warranty due to a ring and piston issue. Alls well now

I have 18000 miles on my 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 L engine. Bought in July of 2018 and have had all service calls at dealership. I notice that about half way through my engine oil life and when I check the engine oil level, I end up adding 3 quarts. I usually check the level every 3000 miles. Nothing burning. Is this normal to burn through about 4 quarts of oil in 10,000 miles? I had a Chevy big block that you had to check every fill up becasue that large of an engine used oil.

Next timie I take it in I am going to have it checked. I already had the top end engine seal replaced under warranty. Hoping I did not buy too early in the 5th gen before bugs were worked out.

That’s not normal. You shouldn’t be using any oil this new.

That's not normal at all. Should get the dealership to start an oil consumption test on your truck. My guess is you've got a new long block or possibly a whole crate motor coming your way.

The 5.7 in our trucks isn't new for 2019. That being said, mine doesn't use enough oil to requiring adding between 6k changes.

Here is a screenshot of the acceptable rate per FCA. It would appear you are right under the limit based on 4qts in 10,000 miles per FCA.


With that said, I would not be happy with this rate of consumption. I just hit 7,500 miles and lost about 1/2 to 3/4 quart since new. Obviously there will be some variation between vehicles, but your consumption is higher than I would be comfortable. Unfortunately with this bulletin out, I am not sure any dealer will help you out, but if you have a good dealer maybe they can get something done for you (free extended warranty or something like that maybe).

I would have to agree that this is not normal. I have had mine since April 2018 with 10,000 miles and I haven't had more than 1/2 quart low between oil changes.

Is it leaking? Can you get under the truck and see anything? Is it in the antifreeze, bad head gasket? Is the tail pipe dry or oily? It's going somewhere, question is where? It's excessive, I would be uncomfortable.

Okay that is some oil consumption there brother. The fact the expectable level of oil use is one quart per 2000 miles up to 50,000 miles tells me right away that too many owners are not breaking their 5.7s in the right way. Be that I had an 06 5.7 Hemi, I never burned any oil with that motor and fast forward to today, much has not changed. Drive these Hemi's like you stole it. That means stop babying this thing. The hemispherical design requires some revs and heat to bed in the rings and bearings. Drive a mix of relaxed, spirited, and aggressive driving and don't be afraid of hurting it. This engine is near bulletproof and if you drive it like an old lady, then the old lady will reveal itself. There is nothing, break-in wise that says differently in the owner's manual. Sadly, if you drove it this way for this long period of time, I'm afraid you have passed the bed-in process...

Thank you for the information. I am tracking how much oil I add per 1000 miles, but I am taking it into the dealership ASAP and request an oil consumption test. At the same time I will have the 20,000 mile service.

I own a 5.0L and I cannot tell you how thankful I am to have a 2017 and not a 2018+. No brand loyalty here. You're right. It was introduced on Fords on the Mustang GT350 flat plane crank 5.2L, and then they put it into mass production on the '18 Mustang and '18 F150 5.0L engines. I think they jumped into it too soon. A small production high-performance engine (GT-R, GT350) is one thing, but hundreds of thousands of engines per year for trucks is a whole different ballgame. Hope they fix it. It's not every engine, but the failure rate is way higher than it should be.

625 miles on my truck. Checked all fluids for the first time in preparation for an 1100 mile trip. Engine oil was a half quart below full. Maybe a low fill from the factory? I’ll keep an eye on it.

I would say not normal, I pull a boat allot and don't burn oil. My 2003 1500 burns oil like that but it has 190k miles on it. Love when they say could (accepted) burn up to WTF.

Just hit 25,000 miles. Checked my oil yesterday @ 50% life on the computer and hasn’t used a drop. My 09 sierra used about a quart every 2500 miles since new. Traded it at 242,000 for my Ram.

That’s great, but also surprising. It SHOULD burn off a little oil over that long of a stretch.

I checked it after the last oil change at it was right at the full line. Still at the same spot on the dip stick. I am happy since I always had to add to my Sierra.

Are you saying you are still using the original oil that was put in at the factory and have driven it 25000 miles so far? And that your oil life indicator only shows 50%? Hard to believe!
