What Radar Detectors are you Running?

Well, I was one of the many who thought he was unbiased. I just learned of his passing though and it made me realize how long ago I purchased my detector. It still serves me well.

Well funny you say that. I went to their site to see what they had to say about my detector and the article I found was horrible. They didn’t even mention it in their conclusion and it had nothing to do with its performance. Definitely a bad first impression but keep drinking its kool aid since its working for you ace.

What are you using? Because they didn't like your detector you are calling fowl? They do pretty intense testing and a have a ton of YouTube videos to show real world testing of many different types of units. No Kool-Aid here my friend...just good solid data and hard facts to support what they say. So what did you buy that Vortex didn't have nice things to say??? Just because it may say "Escort" does not mean it's a good detector as several Escorts from the past got a poor grade in many tests.

Learn to read my friend. I said it had nothing to do with performance. That was the point. Just poorly tested (all detectors) and poorly written. I have an Escort SmartRadar.

Serious question here, I promise I'm not trolling, but what parts of the country still need radar detectors?

I thought I've been noticing law enforcement allowing substantial speeds above posted limits before getting involved. It seems they use to get ya for more than about 5 mph over, but 10 to 15 mph over seems to be more and more common. At 75 mph on the interstate, this is plenty of speed. Isn't it?

This is true for Florida, for sure. On the other hand I know Northern Virginia use to be HORRIBLE about even the tiniest amount of speed. West and Midwest seem pretty lenient.

It really depends. Every cop is an individual and every department and agency has their own policies. I live in a big enough city (250,000 in the metro area) that city police are usually busy with more important stuff. All of the small towns around me? There’s a lot of cops looking for something to do. All bets are off when it comes to speed traps and the staties.

I don’t care to get in a philosophical debate over speed limit ethics but suffice to say that what makes a speed “safe” is entirely dependent on the specific conditions at the time. Speeding isn’t inherently dangerous on its own but it does amplify other risks that may be present. Driving down an empty interstate at 20 over the speed limit is objectively safer than going the speed limit and tailgating.

That said, I don’t typically drive 20 over. I commute about 40 miles and most of that is interstate. A radar detector is cheap insurance to have advance notice to slow down a bit if a cop is around. I haven’t had a ticket in 13 years and the two detectors I’ve had have more than paid for themselves.

The only thing I could find that Vortex wrote about the SmartRadar was in a 2015 forum post he had linked from his site. It was a comparison of several comparable detectors. I wouldn’t fault him too much for what he wrote up half a decade ago. The work he’s been doing since has been great. He’s one of the best sources for comprehensive and objective data and testing. The science behind radar and detecting it gets waved off as voodoo magic by a lot of people who are doing reviews these days. He’s the only place I’ve seen recently that has a good scientific basis for his information. If you’re ever in the market for a new detector, give him another shake.

Yes, that is the one I was referring to. And I hadn’t actually written the site off but was referencing my first take on it when searching for a review of my detector. I’m sure I’ll use it as a reference for when I’m in the market again for a new detector. Thanks.

Is there such thing as immunity? Thanks it’s the first detector I’ve ever owned, so I have nothing to compare it to.

The only immunity is staying home

The R3 is top-class for windshield mount radar detectors. The R7 adds a rear facing antenna to add directional sensing but is otherwise not a “better” (more sensitive) detector. Although with how many sources are out there for false alerts these days, I almost wish I had added the $200 to get the auto gps mute feature.

Uniden R3. Taking my son back to college from south NY to north NY (University of Buffalo). Radar detector goes off with a strong signal while in left lane (believe I was passing at the time) and I go into right lane, slow down and signal stops. Next, NY state trooper passes me in left lane. She (I think) was ambitious and driving up the rear than triggering the radar gun. No problem for me but that can be a got ya. Hopefully with time she'll settle in take a more relaxed approach, park and leave the radar gun on.
 
I have a V1 along with the V1Driver iOS app for auto lockouts etc. I have the newest V1 (which has not changed in the last 3-4 yrs, and I bought about three years ago).
As soon as Radenso comes out with their AI driven RD, I will be getting one as I despise BSM falses... :unsure:
 
Radenso XP Pro SE. Probably the longest range RD out there. They have a new model coming out that will make GPS lockout and BSM falses a thing of the past.

That’s the one I was referring to. AI driven, which they showcased at SEMA a couple of weeks ago. Supposed to be out by the end of next year. Can’t wait...

Theia, I believe. I thought it was coming out Q1/2 of 2020? They said it's all pretty much done other than the packaging. I've held off updating my 2 Passport Max and the XP Pro SE in anticipation of Theia.
