New account here, but hoping someone who has the 'inside baseball' on Dealership Service departments could weigh in. Long story short:
Leased a new Laramie in 23.
23k Miles currently.
  • At the beginning of this year, the rear sliding window failed.
  • I made an appointment to repair the sliding window and for the time being just manually closed it.
  • Apparently water still got in and killed the RF module which killed the fob keys, forced the parking break on, and generally rendered the Truck useless.
  • Towed to Dealer #1. They repaired the Window and the module.
  • A week or so ago, the window that dealer #1 repaired came off its track again. I forced it shut.
  • Within a day, another radio module behind the seat failed. I was stranded at a bridge on ramp on a busy highway and almost got killed (another story).
  • The truck stalled with an indicator of "Shift to Park" . I shifted to park , started again, and made it about 20 feet before it stalled again. Rinse and repeat 3x.
  • State Trooper said I couldn't wait for AAA, because of how hazardous the location was, which meant I had to tow it to the closest possible dealership (Dealership #2).
  • Dealership #2 looked at the truck and said that the Radio Frequency Hub failed.
  • Quoted me $1450.0 for the rear window, $608 for the RF Module, and about $300 for diagnostics.
  • Dealership #2 refused to cover under warrenty because it was clearly the result of water damage, resulting from a broken rear sliding window.
  • I explained that the window had been fixed under warranty already. Dealer #2 doesn't seem to care.

This doesn't seem right to me. If they screwed up the repair and that caused the subsequent problems, I would think it should still be covered. Wanted to get thoughts.

Thanks

Now the dealer called me to say that it was really Pet hair that caused the module to fail. There is no way to access that module without taking out the seat. So I guess if you own a Dog, don't buy a Ram.

Have you contacted the first dealer ? If it’s their fault they should go and get it and repair what they screwed up .

Haven't heard the pet hair theory, kudos to them for the imagination it took to dream that up. Ignore the water behind the seat, that had nothing to do with it. Electronics and water are like peas and carrots

Yeah the pet hair thing is BS beyond BS. Water intrusion is what kills these RF hubs. Take it from me as I have had 2 of them go due to water intrusion. It is true that in trucks without the reclining back seats that you have to remove the rear seat to access the module. So they must have done that to assess the pet hair theory. Unfortunately, that is such a hair-brained theory that you will have to ask them to prove that one. Show you the RF module or connectors to it and the hair intrusion that shorted it. Sounds funny even saying it here. Since it is likely a water intrusion due to a leaky rear window and a rain event, you can make an insurance claim if you have that covered in your policy. Thats what I did and got mine covered. Although in my case I got them to cover the RF failure and moldy carpet but not the window. I treated the mold myself and used the money from that to cover the window using Safelite. Now I have a lifetime on the window from leaks or anything else and consequential damage. Good luck to you, keep us posted.

the dog hair theory sounds like the lone gunman theory LOL.....serv writers are clueless alot of times and they think we are stupid. they are not mechanics they are service salesmen. unfortunately we are forced to go thru incompetent people to get warrantee work "done". i had one act like a windshield squirter and a tail light bulb were huge jobs and kept the truck for 3 days. i got mad picked it up and had it fixed in 20 min on my own. the hose came off the passenger side squirter and i had a bulb laying around my garage. he acted like getting a bulb was the end of the world. then he asked my if i wanted to get the truck serviced there....told him "i wouldn't let him change the air in my interior"
good luck maybe you will have better results.
is it just me but everyone calls it the "frame" the window is frameless like a windshield it's just glued on/on adhesive the part that cracks is the slider window track. i suppose it's really 4 pieces of glass when you look at it closely and the track holds the top bottom and sides together so it's kind of a frame.
better design sadly it a ford product.
