I have a USB dongle that makes it so I don’t have to plug in my phone for Android Auto to work. The issue was that the wifi would stay connected when I was in the house and my phone would not connect to wifi internet router. Well, I found two solutions. Option 1: Micro2 tap adapter, relay switch, and wires. Option2 (plug and play): Option 1 items plus male harness connector and female harness connector.

Option 1: Here are the parts I used,

Micro2 Tap Adapter

Remove USB media hub – cnewman402 shows this best,

Cut the red wire from connector behind the USB media hub, connect the red wire from connector to 30 Blue Wire of relay and the other side to 87 Red wire of relay. Ground 86 White (I did it to a screw near the media hub) and connect 85 black to the fuse tap adapter.

Harness Red Wire.jpg

Plug the micro2 tap adapter into IGN fuse (my choice) or ACC fuse under steering column. That will complete everything and will turn the USB off either when the RAM engine isn’t running (IGN) or when not on (ACC).

Option 2: More expensive, more time consuming, and plug and play (my preference while under warranty).

Instead of cutting red wire from connector to USB media hub, purchase the following connectors,

When looking at the male plug with lock at the top from front, the top left wire needs to be cut and connected to 87 Red of relay. When looking at female plug with lock at the top from front, the top right wire needs to cut and connected to 30 blue wire of relay. 86 and 85 need to be connected as stated in option 1.

Unplug the connector behind USB media hub (female), plug that connector into male part of homemade harness, plug female part of homemade harness into back of USB media hub, and done.

I am hoping that my explanation is not horrible and that anyone can follow this without issue, but let me know if there is something I can further explain or make more sense.

Thank you for the write up it's very appreciated. I'm a little confused still as to how option two is plug in play with three connectors (the two you purchased and the one coming off the USB hub).

Oops, guess I forgot to complete the directions, lol.

Update...installed and it works great. Ports shut off with the truck now. Thanks for the instructions, took about 30 minutes. Had to slide the center console back enough to access the media hub, but quick install once I figured that out. Great info in this thread also that may help anyone else.

Great write-up, I'm looking to do option 2 in the near future as my motorola ma1 needs to be unplugged at home to turn it off. Do you have a picture of where you plugged in the tap adapter under the steering column? I'm not the most electrically savvy, but your instructions seem simple enough to try.

Thanks will be following this when I replace my media hub soon. I have the old hub(I believe) which stops working when temps well above 110 inside vehicle so ordered the new model. Plus I have the desire to kill the usb media power for a CarPlay adapter to disconnect when get home.

Could you update when you change yours? Mine acts like that too.

THANKS! this is an interesting write up you should make a quick video explaining it for those of us ADHD people who struggle reading instructions lol or even an option to sell this as a harness to people, seeing as this would be a popular option for us looking for wireless Android auto/CarPlay in a clean OEM style option.

Nice work overall though!

Thanks for the detailed instructions!! Great work!! I like both solutions!
Question... Why not just use a fuse tap in an ignition controlled fuse panel slot, connected to the "plug side" of the red wire? This would remove the relay and shut off power when the ignition is off.
Thanks again for your super write up.

Thanks for the awesome write-up. I wired up the harness and relay this afternoon, and attempted to get everything installed before it got too dark out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get it working just yet. For whatever reason, I thought I would have to remove the screen in my '21 1500 Limited and ended up making much more work for myself. Come to find out, there are 3 bolts on each side of the center console - two bolts per side of the center console, and another set behind a couple of panels on the dash. Once I removed these, I was able to slide the center console back to expose the plug (thanks for the tip, Hawk85).
Quick question to all who have been successful with this install - What ACC fuse would you tap into under the steering column? I played with a few and haven't been able to get the USB hub to power back up. Also, I connected my ground to the metal bracket that the two front/side bolts mount to. Not sure if this is the best location or not. Where specifically did you connect your ground wire? Any help would be greatly appreciated :D
I am plan to take another look at this tomorrow (and in the light) and hopefully will be able to get things working then. Here are a few pictures for clarity.

I decided to take another whack at it today. It's amazing what a second look with fresh eyes and a little daylight will do. Instead of using a fuse tap under the steering column, I tapped into another wire that I ran last year to hide a USB hub behind the dash to power my course motorsports magsafe phone chargers. After that, I realized that my 10a inline fuse was not big enough to power both the USB hub (2 phone chargers) and the media hub. I stepped it up to a 15a fuse and now everything works perfectly.
