Towed over the weekend

Just waiting on the ProComp lift to be released and then I can get bags for the rear. I'll put the OBA in this month as I use it when we go take the quads out.
Cant wait to see the final product

Before and after pics, image w about 4 inches of sag is without timbrens and additional pic is with timbrens installed. Only 1 -1/2" sag now. 33' TT about 8k lbs shown in pics.

I towed a new toy hauler home 1600 miles over the weekend. No toy in the back, probably came in at about 3500-4000 lbs. Don't know the hitch weight but was surprised how far the truck dropped when I mated them. I'm def gonna add the Timbren DR1500DQ air bags suggested in this thread. My Anderson distribution hitch leveled things out fairly well, although I was still getting a lot of cars flashing brights at me. The back end ideally would have been a bit higher.

Mileage without towing was close to 20 at best, with the trailer was closer to 11 at 55, 9.5 at 70+. Truck never had an issue or slowed down, even on the passes. As long as I was willing to burn mass quantities of gas, it'd do whatever I asked. The only problem I got with sway was in some fierce winds. I slowed to 55 and everything stabilized.

I'm wishing I had air suspension though. I'd like the 2" lift kit, but with the cap I want to get, my rig wouldn't fit into the garage, dangit. Actually, I may not fit anyways...which if I don't, will make the 2" lift an easier decision. I'm still wondering about an aftermarket air suspension....

Another option will/would be upgrading to stiffer springs. Many 4th gen guys went that route. I've had timbrens on 2 different trucks in the past, and with my 4th gen I'm going to go with tuftruck 1211 springs instead (replace stock coil springs with a 50% stiffer coil). They have a 30% stiffer version and a variable rate stiffer version. Its about the same price as timbrens

Timbrens are great when loaded and add stability as well. But i've found there are circumstances when they result in pretty harsh ride characteristics under moderate payload (due to timbrens repeatedly slapping against the axle). Even completely empty, on big enough bumps, you'll slap against them.

I think I'll prefer a constantly stiffer spring than the occasional jarring from the timbrens. I'm sure there will be more rear coil upgrade options coming for the 5th gens to reduce rear sag..

Also, the stock springs are progressive/variable rate, so they are designed to give more initially.

That's a nice looking toy hauler....thank you for the first hand experience information as it is the best we can ask for. Good luck w the timbrens and even though there aren't any for 2019 the 2018 fits just fine. Happy Hauling

Hope this isn't a stupid question coming from a 1st time truck buyer - does all these sag problems get solved with Air Suspension? And if so just wondering if the price was too cost prohibitive to some to get..

On my 4th gen I used the Air Lift air bags, they go in between the rear coils. They also are low pressure max is 24psi. They worked great for towing with a Andersen sway hitch. I don’t think they are out for the 19’ and the 18’ probably would work but. Not sure.

Air suspension is probably the best option out there but w warranty and multiple points of failure and personal experience w air bags in the past it wasnt an option for me. It may sound like I push timbrens or sear by them, thing is it's a virgin approach to enhancing your suspension and not hindering or cutting or welding or having to air up. For those that have it...kudos to you for going that route. For me I go w the least points of failure which in this case is one screw that's already there put by factory and only $214 and something that takes 15 minutes to ins to install both timbrens. I've used them in 3 previous heavy duty trucks and 3 times they have worked as I wanted. Good luck in your decision and please do your due diligence on whatever Avenue you choose to follow. Good luck to you.

I don't have my truck yet, but my current tow vehicle has 4 corner air suspension and it has worked well over 160k+ so I ordered it with my Ram. Current tow vehicle is a different brand, so I'm home Ram executed it as well. The self leveling feature has been great, and the ride is too. I do wonder about failures (just like I did 11 years ago when I purchased my LR3), but for me the risk was worth it. Hopefully I'll be saying the same thing about the Ram in 11 years!

Pics from earlier today, getting ready to hit the road... labor day camping trip
Curious, how long is your trailer and what is the dry weight? I just purchased a 32' Jayco Jayflight that weighs 7000 lbs dry. In process of buying 2019 Ram1500 with 3.92 gears and eTorque and wonder how it will do. Do you have the 22" tire option? If so is towing ok.

My trailer is 33ft long, weighs 7300lbs dry and 10,700lbs or so fully loaded...I have the 3.21 gears and no E-torque and it tows and stops very nicely, even up steep hills....sucks my gas but if I had to worry about that then I wouldn't have sold my 2007 dodge ram megacab 3500 dually for this one...lol. I have the 20" wheels and no air ride suspension, its factory springs and for alleviating sag I threw on a pair of 8600lb Timbrens in place of the factory bump stops...hope this helps

No
Thank you for sharing that link, good to know.
no worries, we r here to help one another in whatever way we can...."we are here for a good time, not a long time"....lol

Thank you for your reply. The one I'm buying is fully equipped. "Limited", with everything including the e-torque engine, 5.7 bed, Ivory white with 22" tires. I won't be towing a lot but want it to do the job when I do. Hope to have my truck by the first of next week.
