Steering Wheel Shaking

Hey all , I’m having a steering wobble at between 40-45 MPH. The dealer has tried to rotate the tires , resurface rotors and do a software update all of which have failed to solve this issue. Has anyone else had this issue ? If so what was the fix. They are also telling me that I could be the calipers but that doesn’t make sense to me seeing how it doesn’t wobble when the brakes are applied. Also when they resurfaced the rotors it seemed to make it worse.

Resurfacing the rotors likely reduced the life of them a little bit. If the problem doesn't show up under braking, it's probably not a brake problem.

Sounds like you have a problem with tires and/or wheels. My bet is crappy tires and a bad balance.

Yeah it’s strange cause it’s intermittent and they did rotate the tires and that didn’t solve the issue either.

If you have multiples wheels & tires that have issues, rotating them won't solve anything. The fact that the rotor resurfacing made the issue worse could be related to the wheels+tires being removed and re-installed in different locations. 40 lbs. of spinning rubber and steel can make all the difference.

Yes. Totally dumb to blame the rotors or brake system. I wonder a lot about these dealerships. Just about has to be tires/sheels.

I totally agree with that, but you know they start cheap and simple instead of just fixing it right the first time. I am just disappointed cause I know they are good trucks unfortunately I didn’t get one.

I have experienced the exact shake you are talking about, intermittent though, its fine driving 40-45 around asphalt surface streets. I narrowed it down to the actual road/surface, it only does it on certain sections of the freeway that are diamond grooved in the longitudinal direction. Supposedly this helps with wet weather traction and road noise. However my truck does not seem to like it too much especially the continental tires I have that have 2 rain grooves around the entire circumference of the tire. Not sure if you're experiencing the same issues. At 50 mph + they seem to roll just fine in these grooved sections of roadway but at 40-45 mph the steering wheel shakes back and forth. If it's a balance issue it should do it all the time regardless of the road surface.

So in the past since I live in Montana I change out tires for the seasons. I have only become quite aware of how important it is to properly put wheels on with proper torque....something I doubt my tire changers have been doing. Doing this incorrectly leads to wheel wobble that changes how the brakes are compressed leading to warpage. I intend to work on this in the future.

Consider a road force balance...fixed my shake

That’s exactly what it was. Thanks for all that gave input. So far so good. They replaced the front rotors , calipers , pads and then finally rotated and balanced tires. I will keep everyone posted if it changes as I just got it back today.

Well all was good until this morning on the way Into work. I’m thinking maybe electrical issue or software. So yesterday I noticed my display was different font and noticed I had more apps on the infotainment system. The music sounded different and everything was just smoother, however this morning the steering shake came back and I noticed the radio had reverted back to the original settings it was before. Any ideas ? I’m very disappointed and dissatisfied this will now be the 5th time the truck has been in the shop. I live the truck but don’t have the time or money to continue to take off work and take it to the shop every two or three days. Ram customer care is involved but that is not fixing the problem. My next action will be replacement or my money back.

Could very well be software or sensor related to the electric power steering system.

My truck is now back at the dealer once again for more issues. When does it stop ? I have filed for arbitration and lost of course, now I’m stuck with a truck that doesn’t perform per FCA standards but yet no one wants to help.

New issues , there is now a rattle somewhere in the dash/ steering wheel housing that the dealer is saying they can’t duplicate even after I show them videos. Also my steering wheel leather is peeling and the uconnect theme won’t stay which they say is a uconnect issue that they will have a update for come 3rd quarter. I have been waiting on that update since I bought the truck in November:

What did they say about the steering wheel peeling? They should replace that under warranty I would think. Squeaks and rattles are usually a tough one to get repaired unless it does it all the time and easy to reproduce. I have just located and fixed all of mine myself up to this point except for the front brakes and the brake pedal. Took them 2 tries on the front brakes and it's still too soon to tell if they are permanently fixed are or not, the first try lasted about a month and its been a little over a week since attempt #2. My wobble is still there and will likely never get fixed. 2021 model year GM trucks will have new interiors, there's also a new Tundra around the corner and the F-150 will be due for a significant refresh at the very least. Ram will only be able to ride the interior on these trucks for another year or 2, before the competitors have their interior on point. Ram is already outclassed by GM and Ford power train wise, they really need to step up QC and get the gremlins worked out of these trucks if they want to stay competitive.

I totally agree, unfortunately FCA doesn’t care about there customers like some of the other big market names. Toyota may not have all the technology but you don’t see them in the shop often either. Ram is the #1 truck for MFR buybacks and I should have known better. The fortunate part is it a lease and I will continue to nickel and dime then until the truck runs and performs like it should. I could understand if the truck was 3 years old and had some rattles or issues here and there but my truck is 8 months old and has been in the shop 8x which is a little stressful and inconvenient. As far as the steering wheel they are saying I should wait and see if FCA comes up with a fix if it is a reoccurring problem. I said no replace it now and if it happens again will replace it again.
