Steering rack noise and losing power assist issue

Have a 2019 Ram Laramie, not many miles on it yet. It has had a steering noise from new. Checked some other posts on here which are not quite like this one. Had it to a dealer (am overseas on deployment) but cant get it back right now, they checked the ground strap and found it OK as there was a recall for that (even though this one was not part of that recall). Rack was also replaced. Did not fix issue. August 2019 build date.

It will also lose power steering assist completely on occasion which is not good.

Heres the thing, its making a noise from the steering rack which sounds exactly like it has a hydraulic pump steering in it (know its electric) that has low power steering fluid, exact same noise. When turning the steering wheel fast it sometimes loses power steer assist completely. If turning the wheel slower it still has assist but makes the noise like it has low power steering fluid on a hydraulic rack but its electric steering. It sounds like the steering rack is struggling when under torque. As the rack has already been replaced, and that did not fix it, I am thinking electrical issue with something else, and its not the ground strap recall, already done that.
Any ideas?

Mine makes the same sound when making a steep turn at speed but I haven't been able to repeat it on-demand yet so I haven't taken it in. I haven't had any actual steering issues though.

When testing I almost thought it was coming from the speakers once (almost like the ANC was making the sound). I can only get it to make the noise when I have the radio turned up, every time I turn the radio down I don't hear anything. It's odd lol.

This is definitely not the radio.

My steering column has been making this noise for a year now. Almost sounds like the same sound as the abs kicking in for a second or two. A grinding rubbing sound...not sure if this is the same sound you are hearing. The dealership says they can't replicate it so haven't been able to fix it. I guess I'll just have to wait till it completely breaks and leaves me stranded somewhere haha

No its not the steering column, you can hear it come directly from the rack, it will do it parked and turning the wheel, and standing or lying next to it with hood open its definitely the rack.

Idea's anyone?

Mine is doing the same thing but haven' t been able to take it into the dealership due to it not happening all the time. I always have to do my homework first before bringing it in the shop because they won't even attempt to fix it.

Mark @ Ram Cares... any way to reach out to you and get some help with this issue?? My 2019 ram is sitting in the shop right now with a steering rack issue and no power assist with 37,500 miles / out of warranty and no repair solution in sight.

Bad publicity for Ram trucks.

I see alot of people on this forum who would agree.

I have had the same issues with noise coming from the front end while turning. The steering rack has already been replaced once already. It did not take long and the noise became worse ( sounds like grinding noises ) while turning slow. Took it back to the dealer. Dealer said that Ram is working on another steering rack design to fix the issue. Problem is they said the new design will not be ready until around March. My concern is with the metal on metal grinding sound becoming worse and this not being replaced until March or so being a safety concern for my family.
If this is a recall issue, it needs to be handled as such and if they do not have a fix for it until a later date a replacement vehicle needs to be given until my vehicle is deemed safe to drive. I love my truck but I love my family more. Any information on this would be great.

WOW, I thought I was being critical or possibly crazy, but mine does the EXACT thing, kind of a weird grinding/low fluid type sound, I can only recreate it consistantly pulling a right turn into my driveway, out on the town it's touch and go. Has anyone been able to nail it down and get it actually fixed? I am ready to jump ship with this coupled with the HVAC system still not fixed. The 2021 F150 is looking pretty convincing right now.

Mine doesn't sound like grinding or like a wheel bearing or something it sounds more like a grunting sound and it only does it randomly and when it happens it maybe lasts a second or two. I never lose the power steering like some have said above. So far is just irritating.

Hi Mark,
I bought my 2020 RAM 1500 last year. I've taken it into the dealership and they have tried to pass it off as my tires rubbing in the wheel well. (that's a bunch of bologna) I have this same issue, grinding and vibration in steering while turning. Tech at dealership cannot repeat it... Would like to find a tech who would "REALLY" take the time to research.
