Some Real World MPG Numbers

I would not have bought another RAM pickup without a 3.92 axle ratio, even though it does affect mpg a bit.

I consider my mileage downright disappointing. 13.4 local driving... I pulled a set of motorcycles to Colorado this spring and only got 9.8 mpg, same bikes same trailer in my old F150 and I got better than 11mpg.

End of the day, this truck gets absolutely miserable gas mileage compared to any of the modern trucks I have owned.

This generation of the 5.7L has been around since 2013 so it’s not surprising that it’s behind the rest.

I hope that RAM has a power plant update planned during the 5th gen lifespan otherwise the economy is going to drive customers away instead of accepting the disappointment.

I bought a truck so economy was not on my “must have” list. That being said my last truck (17 year old 3/4 ton diesel that weighed 8000 lbs empty) got 15.5 mpg overall and my RAM is getting 14.5 mpg overall. I was hoping for more but the RAM was the only truck I liked out of all the 2019s.

20 Laramie, 5.7 no e torque, 4x4, 3.21 rear, 5,7 bed, crew cab.

I took delivery back in February and was honestly expecting around 15 mpg. I have been pleasantly surprised with what I am getting.

You are lucky, I got a limited etorque with 57 and 321. Averaging around 14-15. I never even seen the 20s on this truck

I have a
21 ram 1500
5.7 V8
4x4
crew cab
6’4 bed
3.92

currently trying to find out whats wrong with my truck as well 😂 as I drive about 80% freeway. Not a speed demon and I use cruise when lever I can.

Currently getting 13.3MPG at about 1,000 miles on my truck. Seeing as I just got rid of a full size 16 year old Ford with a long bed on an 8” lift and 38” tires that thing was getting 12 MPG I’d assume this little 1500 should be more than 1MPG better....

I was getting a little over 15 mpg on my last truck which was a 7780 lb 2003 Ford F-250 4x4 diesel. I thought I'd do better dropping a ton of weight (literally) but I'm getting the same in my RAM.

I do about 50% freeway driving and don't go over 70 mph (anything over that and my mpg noticeably goes down).

It's still cheaper since in the long run since I don't have all the costs that go with a heavy truck (4 gallons of oil at each change, bigger parts are more expensive and wear out quicker, etc.). 😉

Here is my mileage
2020
Hemi e-torque
3.21
Crew cab
Ram box
Factory premium wheels and tires
No lift
Pleased with my mileage as I live in rural area. Back roads. Most trips are 10 miles each way. The mileage below is 70/30 local to highway. On highway I have hit 23.5 several times in a 60 mph zone using cruise and flat land. As most have said over 70 mph and she drinks the gas. But I knew that as this is my third hemi going all the way back to 2005.

I'm just under 6 months and 13k miles with mostly city driving in North Dallas, about 80/20 city/highway.
I'm averaging 18 mpg over the 6 months and 13k miles, more than happy with the mpg performance of my truck.

Since I bought my truck back in March 2020 I have been tracking the real-world MPG. I know this has been talked about before but I wanted to throw out my 2 cents Fwiw, Some comments below:
  • When I bought the truck I was hoping to average 18 mpg.
    • Currently Averaging 15.90 mpg after 5750 miles, I believe I am past engine break-in period, just need to get a first Oil change done
    • This was considering the gearing and additional weight for my truck
  • I opted the extra $$ for the E-Torque (yes I know it's unproven, but as an engineer, it had my attention and curiosity)
    • As people have stated on this forum before there is the belief the E-Torque actually decreases Mpg, I am beginning to think this may be true as potentially the Electric motor is not disengaging as it should, requiring the Hemi to work harder leading to less mpg
    • The Auto start/stop isn't that bad honestly
  • "Don't expect to get good mpg in that big truck, you idiot!"
    • I drive like a grandpa, never accelerate fast and if I can use cruise control I will
      • I have read the Hemi gets better Mpg when you accelerate hard so I have been considering giving it a try.
    • I would hope to be somewhat close to the sticker...
    • My father averages better than the sticker on his F150 (16',23.4mpg, 2.7EB, 2wd,45k miles)
  • I understand Mpg will vary truck to truck spec to spec and most sticker mpg rating systems are flawed
    • If this is true then give me a more realistic estimate of what I will achieve, just be honest up front.
  • "Bro! I average 23mpg in my rebel lifted blah blah blah"
    • Track the numbers as I have and prove it to me.
  • The game of premium fuel, technically the engine is optimized for 89 but can run 87
    • I am still testing out different fuels to see if the price difference is worth the extra mpg.
Overall I love my truck, I just wish Ram was more upfront about the Mpg values because at the end of the day we all pay at the pump.
  • Some key things about my truck
    • Completly stock
    • Crew Cab 4x4
    • 6'4" Bed
    • 5.7 E-Torque
    • 3.92
    • Off-Road Group
    • Air Ride (truck will drop to Aero Mode)
    • 33gal tank
    • GVWR (7100 lb)
    • Max payload (1172 lb)

Disregarding the outliers where you are hauling stuff, you average out to 17mpg. So whats the problem? The advertised mpg's are gonna be just bare truck with nothing in it. Probably even found the lightest test driver to do it. The advertised mpg's also are most likely trucks with least options possible. You have an off-road package, air ride, and a bigger fuel tank adding to your weight. Just some food for thought.

4X4 crew cab with the 5’7” bed, 3.92 gears, standard size tank, worst average for the tank hand calculated is 24, best is about 29, EcoDiesel of course. Almost 9k miles on it, no issues so far.

I'm shocked that nobody is talking about gas. I is a big variable as to the "quality" and how it relates to overall performance. Look for Top Tier stations for best results. Finding the cheapest gas could cost MPG. Where I used to work, there was a WAWA there with gas that was $.10 cheaper than everyone else in the area. When I ran the WAWA gas, my MPG's were lower by as much as 3 MPG. It wasn't worth buying because at the end of the day, it cost me more money to operate.
With the MPG's all over the board, try running tests on certain stations for a couple fill ups and you will get different results. Of course, if you are in an area with winter blend, that will also play a role until it is gone.

I use 87 octane from Murphy USA/Walmart. It’s an ethanol blend.

went ride around last night and hit 18.9 mostly Hwy driving. Mds kicked in quite a bit making almost ~30mpg on the Hwy.

I am using 89 octane as recommended. Fill ups are from Exxon, shell, some regional stations that say their gas is top grade. All are 10% ethanol. I can get ethanol free gas but it runs $1 more a gallon so any negates any mpg gain. I do run ethanol free gas in my boat, lawn tractor and all yard equipment. It’s wonderful stuff for those.

I have a 2021 crew cab 5.7 w/ etorque, 3.92, 4x4, and a payload of 1600 (everything stock). The lifetime average says 15.8 mpg with just under 6,000 miles.

I have no idea the ratio of city/hwy in terms of mileage, but nearly all of my hwy driving comes on weekends when I go on longer drives for mountain biking, camping, etc. During the week it’s almost all city driving, with frequent stops (most days, I doubt the truck ever really warms up). And I live in the foothills of the San Bernardino mtns in Southern California, so around town all of my driving is up or down pretty steep hills. So I have to imagine my around town mpg is pretty crappy.

I took a trip to northern Utah in late December (1500 miles round trip) with my wife, kids, dog and luggage. I averaged 20 mpg on the nose, and that’s with several stretches of the 15 fwy where the speed limit is over 70.

All things considered, I’m pretty content with the mpg.
