Significant Noise From Front End Over Bumps

Have 1200 miles on the Ram Limited and just developed a very noticeable noise from the front end. Initial thought is sway bar. I've explored a bit under there and checked the torque on the sway bar, but nothing obviously loose.

Dealer can't get me in until next week, but have it scheduled.

Just curious if anyone here has had a similar issue of something not properly torqued. I cant imagine anything else with only having 1200 miles on it.

There are a lot of threads on this issue. Search on "clunk" and you'll have plenty of evening reading. You might want to just crawl under there and retorque your sway bar links. That has helped many and there are several members who've had their links replaced by the dealer to eliminate this.

I could hear the clunk noise under the truck only when going straight over a tall speed hump, not while turning like many people are experiencing.

Thanks for the feedback. Brother came over today and rocked the truck to replicate the noise. It was a loose Sway bar end link. I had just torqued the sway bar itself...dumb of me not to check the end links.

18MM bolt on the top part of the sway bar end link for those who want to give it a tighten. You don't need to take the tire off, but I did and checked everything else while I was there.

probably a premature post as I didn't thoroughly diagnose myself. Apologies, but hopefully it helps a few out there!

Had same issue around 1500 miles and just picked up from dealer today. Was loose sway bar, mine was built 1/19/19 , so not sure if coincidence or not .

Mine is back at the dealer for a second time with the front end noise. The first time they replaced the sway bar links (or something like that) and that was at 1300 miles. Now I have 3900 and it's making noise again. I also had the firewall leak repaired last week (mentioned in another post). My service manager has taken care of me pretty well so far so let's hope we get it fixed permanently this time. At least he heard the noise when he drove it so I will let them do their thing and take care of it.

I am bringing mine to the dealer on Monday, have an appointment. I told them about the body mount TSB, but I'm not so sure that's what mine is. The sound seems to be more in the front right, not as far back as the A pillar. But hey, that's their job to figure out - I found a reliable way to get the sound to happen though. For me, if you are going straight and doing 10-20 mph, quickly turn the wheel back and forth and mine will clunk clear as day repeatedly.

They checked the front end and didn’t find anything lose or any dead animals hanging around. Never heard the noise myself on the drive home. At least they pirated the brake pedal recall parts and took care of that for me. So we shall see how it goes. It’s on my service record so if the front end falls off when we make our road trip to Utah in June then maybe I won’t have to buy a lottery ticket.

That's about how I feel about it.

So far I've taken mine in for:

-What appeared to be some kind of leak by the transmission, dealer insists it was only grease, and to their credit, it's not back in almost 1000 miles since they checked it for me.
-Noise in 4WD auto, dealer says normal since front axle is engaged in auto.
-Left front tire with more wear on the outer edge than other tires, dealer says alignment in spec and it's normal wear.


We'll see if they can find my front end noise next Monday. I'll even personally take the tech on a drive and sharply move the steering wheel back and forth. Hasn't failed once to bring the noise on for me.

Same here. I hit the 2 nuts on each side with an 18MM socket on an impact wrench and the clunk is gone. Seemed like the top ones were the culprit as the (easy to reach) bottom ones didn't budge much.

Confirmed when I got home today per advice here, mine was also passenger side. About 1/4-1/2 turn left before it was tight. Noise is completely gone!

Can you tell me how you were able to get the 18mm socket on the top nut? I'm approaching it from the back of the tire and it's really difficult to get the socket on and have room to crank. It doesn't appears that approaching it from the front is any better.

I used an 18mm deep-well socket, attached to a typical 1/4" foot-long drive. It's tight in there, but if you put the socket on first, then get the drive up in there, you can get it. I used my thumbs and pushed against the frame of the car to tighten.

Tourque specs ?

Not sure, I have an appointment on Monday for the V07 recall, and I will mention that this was loose. I will see if they will give me the torque rating. I just made it as snug as I could get it, and it took a almost 1/2 turn to get there, so it was pretty loose.
