Here is the next car on my list. We have to go back a year to the summer of 1989. I had finished the spring semester at Magnolia and was preparing to go to the ROTC Advanced Course at Fort Riley, Kansas in July. I was in an advanced placement program and was going to get commissioned there after completion. I had quit my job in Magnolia and moved “home” until it was time to go. When I got home I found two Corvettes. Dad had been buying sports cars at heavy equipment auctions again. o_O

The first was a 1974 L88 with 454 engine. It would have been a great except the front end was completely smashed.

L88VetteWrecked.jpg

And the second one was this cool little red 1977 Vette with factory wire wheels, luggage rack and the sad little stock 350 engine.

1977Corvette.jpg

The 77 Vette had been running until Daddy and a "lady friend" has gone for a little afternoon cruise. He said the lights got really bright and then everything electrical quit working. And Daddy didn't work on anything unless he could stand between the front wheel and the engine. :p When I saw the battery, I knew what had happened. The voltage regulator in the alternate had frozen and the alternator had fried the electrical system with too many volts. And of course, the battery was bloated and cooked.

VetteEngine.jpg

Luckily, there was the L88 for parts. I know a smarter move would have been to cannibalize the 77 Vette to fix the 74 L88. But that would have been too big a project for cars that were bought on a lark. Every afternoon after finishing up on some truck or heavy equipment, I’d work on the red Vette. And then at dark I’d drive to Arkadelphia and run for a couple of hours. Arkadelphia is a beautiful little town with two universities and is sort of situated between two rivers. And there was nice jogging trail that covered about half the town. It was also in a “dry county” back then meaning it was illegal to sale alcohol. So it was very safe to be out at night running on the trails and down the city street.

77Vette.jpg

When I had finished cannibalizing the L88 for electrical parts and bulbs, I put a dealer tag on the red Vette and began driving it to Arkadelphia every evening with the t-tops off. There’s nothing like being in a C3 Vette. It draws lots of looks and everyone thinks it’s cool. I only wish it had a place to lock up the tops securely like the Fiat had under the hood for its one-piece top.

Of course, both Vettes were soon sold after that. But I’ve always wanted one since then. ;)

This is a photo of a car just like my much beloved 1981 Grand Prix.

This car originally came with the much-dreaded Oldsmobile 350 diesel engine. This car was only two years old when I bought it off a used car lot in Texarkana for not much money. About a year afterward, I rebuilt the diesel engine top to bottom. The only good this did was it made me the "diesel car" kid at the diesel shop since none of the older guys wanted to mess with them. I even did some side work trying to get these dogs running for folks broke down on I-30. There was also the benefit of being able to back up to one my daddy’s big truck and syphon fuel directly into my car with a piece of hose. Remember, I was 18 years old. About a year after the engine rebuild, the Olds Diesel lost compression and got too hard to start again. I like to consider this due to bad engine design and not my 19 year-old mechanicing skills. :D
LOVE those old A-Bodies. One of my buddies had a '79 Cutlass Supreme I borrowed for a few weeks while my first '85 Nissan 4x4 was in the shop, and it was awesome! I always liked the look of the Grand Prix nose and taillights better, though.

I had a white '81 Grand Prix (white top) with navy interior in high school. It had the V6, which was terrible. But it had the most comfortable seats of any car I've owned. Years later, after it had changed hands a couple of times, one of my brother's friends finally put a V8 in it. Nice car.

I wish I had photos of my first two trucks. Both were second gen Dodge Dakotas. The first was a 1997 black club cab Sport, which was an extended two door with a tiny bench seat in the back. The competitors of the time were compact pickups with jump seats in the back; the Dakota was, to my knowledge, the only midsize truck of the time.

The second was a 2001 quad cab SLT, two-tone (Patriot Blue and silver) paint. Great looking truck. SLT was the top trim at the time, but was still cloth seats. The quad cab was rightfully a crew cab, with real back seats real humans could fit in.

Both trucks were RWD. I saw a regular cab second gen Dakota in a parking lot the other day. It’s still a nice looking truck, but it looked so tiny with its low suspension and 15” wheels.

Toyota had the mid-size T-100 during the '90s, but the 2nd Gen Dakota pretty snuffed them out.
Oh that’s right, and at the time I got my first Dakota, I worked with a guy who owned one. The T-100 was a bit bigger than the Dakota, yet it had an I-4 where my first Dakota had the 3.9L V6, and the second the 4.7L V8.

edit: according to Wikipedia, the T-100 was also available with a V6 (and initially that was the only engine), but my co-worker’s truck had the four cylinder. Also, the Dakota had a four cylinder as the base engine.

I know this one should get some laughs, but it was a kick driving and a great sleeper. I installed the TRD supercharger at 31,000 miles and it was still running strong at 144,000 when I gave her up. I never did put any drag radials like some of the other guys. Just regular tires. 13.3 @103 was my quickest time at the track. Still have that one on youtube.
I'm sorry, but it was a kick in the butt red light to red light.
I did get one dyno run and the old guy gave me crap about it. 416 at the rear wheels, but it was 90 degrees with high humidity. He told me to come on back when it got down in the 60's with dry air and he promised me I would see at least 435 at the rear. Never did go back. Toyota stopped selling the TRD superchargers so know you have to go after market DSCF6458.JPG DSCF6479.JPG and loose your factory warranty. I had platinum warranty on this one for 100,000 miles and it covered s/c components as well.
Ok, I'm done.

1st car - 1988 Pontiac Firebird. My brother gave me the car when I turned 15. It was sitting on four flat tires, the interior was destroyed, and the engine didn’t run. But it was mine and that was all that mattered lol. I got it running and slowly began to restore it over the next few years. It looked almost identical to a Trans Am once I was finished with it. I sold it around my 20th birthday. The guy I sold it to said it was going to be a father/son race car project. Unfortunately, the kid totaled it street racing just a few months after they purchased it from me.

2003 Mazdaspeed Protege
I bought this little car just due to how unique it was. The Mazdaspeed Protege was the first line of Mazdaspeed vehicles that Mazda produced. It was considered to be a concept/limited edition production. Only 4.500 of these were produced, with only 1150 of them being black. Very cool car, but my time with it was relatively short lived. I only owned it for about 3 years.

2014 Mazda3
This was my first new car purchase. I bought this in early 2014, and held on to it up until I traded it in for my Ram. Awesome daily driver, that got great MPGs. I still somewhat regret trading it in. It needed a little work, but nothing extensive. Looking back, I wish I would have purchased the Ram, and held on to the Mazda as a second vehicle.

My Motorcycles!
2008 Suzuki GSXR 600 (Blue/White)
2008 Suzuki Boulevard C50
2012 Suzuki GSXR 750 (Yellow/Black)
2015 Suzuki GSXR 1000 (Blue/White/Fluorescent accents)

I’m a motorcycle fanatic. The 600 was my first bike and I bought it back in 2012 with only 233 miles on it. I still own this bike and my wife now rides it. I owned the 750 for about 3 years before trading it in and finally upgrading to the 1000. The boulevard was a bobber project that I decided to sell shortly after completing. Someone made me an offer on it that I couldn’t refuse. Hoping to pick me up a similar project again sometime soon.

Believe it or not but I've never owned a single car in my life.
These are some of the toy haulers I've had over the last 15 years.
I miss them all for different reasons.

Here’s what I traded in for the Ram.
Apparently I didn’t take a picture of it after I put Bilstein 5100s up front, which lifted it about 3 inches and looked great.
