Roof Replacement (Cutting and Welding??)

Hey all,

My truck is currently in the body shop for a roof and antenna replacement. Now that they have had my truck for 1 week they are saying they need to cut factory welds and re-weld. Because of this they need to completely gut the interior of the truck. Can someone confirm that this cutting and welding is necessary to replace the very top painted panel of the roof.

It's not a bolt in piece, so yes they'd have to cut & weld. And you wouldn't want them welding stuff close to your easily melted/flammable interior, so out it comes.

What happened?
 
Entered a parking garage that I had plenty of clearance according to the height restriction bar. There was a low hanging water pipe with no warning signs or parking stops to prevent driving under it. I didn't think I'd hit, I was wrong.

Insurance, I'm paying my deductible. I'm trying to get the mall to claim liability to just cover the deductible, but now that my truck will be in the shop for over a month according to the shop I'm going to try and get the mall to cover my deductible and a rental. They aren't giving in without a fight unfortunately. I really do not want to go the small claims court route, but I have a solid case if I do.
 
Yeah the mall needs to cover that! They also need to change that height restriction bar asap to avoid any other trucks getting damaged.

They're saying since I crossed through spots I was driving in a "no driving spot". The pipe is directly adjacent from the exit/entrance. Anyone in their right mind will cut through to exit. In the pic the pipe looks obviously low, not so obvious in a lifted truck lesson learned for me and hopefully some of you other folks can learn from this experience too.

HEIGHT RESTRICTION BARS ARE NOT A GUARANTEE!!!

My new SOP for going in a garage will be lowering to entry level (air suspension) while grabbing he ticket.

I remember doing this years ago in D.C. with a work van and I got completely stuck when the rear of the van caught a pipe running across a ramp going to a lower level of the parking garage. I roasted the right rear tire trying to get myself unstuck. Luckily, the pipe was sitting against concrete above it and the Vic couplings didn’t break. If they did, I could have potentially cost my company a large fine.
 
That's one thing I miss about the 4th gens. The radio antenna also served as a height warning. It was slightly taller than the highest spot on the roof. So if the antenna clears the truck will clear.
 
I suppose you could drill a hole and mount one to the front fender. I would never do this though.
 
2.5 months my truck has been in the shop now. The Insurance company is reimbursing me for the deductible and the cost of the rental. However, since the collision shop is taking so long to finish the repair they have covered my rental for the last month and half. The shop ended up breaking the windshield during the repairs, plus holidays, plus foul weather has delayed the **** out of this. Their initial estimate was December 3rd.
 
New rule, no more parking garages.
