Rebel Owners: Fuel Economy After Swapping Tires?

Does anyone know what the stock wheels and duratrac tires on the 2019 Rebel weigh?

Pulled one of mine off and the tire/wheel together weighs 83 lbs. According to Tirerack, the Duratrac itself is 54 lbs, which leave 29 for the wheel.

GARebel, thanks for the info! Comparing to my current setup, my Coopers are 61 lbs. (+7) and my Fuel wheels are 28 (-1). Puts my setup at 89 lbs, about 6 more than stock.

Well, I stripped it down to "normal truck" status. We'll see how it does on economy over the next couple weeks 'til I need to put the tent back on.

I got a bighorn about 3 weeks ago and was getting about 18mpg daily driving. I bought a set of Rebel take off wheels and now get between 15.5 and 16.5 doing the same commute, but also being a bit more easy on the pedal. So it seems to me 2-3mpg is the difference you get with highway touring vs A/Ts.

Hey folks,

This is just for the Rebel owners who have/had the Goodyear Duratrac tires, which are pretty aggressive for all terrains. I'm curious how changing to milder tires may have impacted your fuel economy. I'm also wondering if anyone went with a taller/milder tire and how that's compared to the stock 33" Gooyears. Have you swapped your tires out for something else? What tire and what size? Have you seen any improvement in economy? Did it stay the same? Did it get worse? I'm curious if going to a slightly taller tire could help by pulling the revs down. I doubt it would be enough to overcome the increased tire weight and aero drag from being taller, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

The reason I ask all this is because I'm fairly convinced a major reason our trucks get worse mileage than other Rams is due to the tires and their rolling resistance. I'm planning on replacing my tires very soon and will likely go with a milder all terrain.

And please keep the old, tired "you shoulda bought a Prius" comments to yourself. None of us expected great economy, but 60% of those numbers is pretty disappointing. So I'd like to see if a tire swap could be helpful.

I have Pulsar installed & just saw 18.8MPGs on fairly short hwy trip at ~5,600’ of elevation on fairly flat terrain. This run was in “Economy” mode and I’ll do the same route next week in “Stock” mode. I’ll continue comparisons over future weeks on same drive in different settings.

I'd really like to know how you accomplished this??? I just did a round trip of approximately 2,400 miles and averaged 12.9 mpg. Speeds were mostly interstate and 70-80 mph. On the way up I used mostly cruise control. On the way back I did not.

Truck is a 2019 ram rebel. 3.92 rear with 6" inch lift, 22x10 rims and 35x12.5 tire. So similar to yours. How many miles are on your truck?

Just ran 750 miles on I-10, 14.1 on one tank. 15.1 on the other. Running about 70 on average, 35x11.50 nitto terra on a 20x9 0 offset wheel. Not too bad really, but you can’t drive any faster. Going 75 drops me down to about 11, tried that in multiple sections. I bought this wheel and tire setup specifically for this, as to not be running 22s and mud tires on long distances which I’ve done in the past. Makes a huge difference and the truck drives so much better.

Also can’t use the cruise, it’s awful if you have heavy tires.

Truck has 4,500 miles in it. I also used 91 octane & no %ethanol.
What kind of tires are you running? My Goodyear Ultra Terrains are amazing!! Best A/T I’ve ever had for ride, noise & look.

I was running both 87 and 89. Tested each on one trip a piece. I highly doubt 91 would make that much of a difference. I'm running toyo rts which I know to be a little heavier.

You running pure gas or %ethanol?
I see a drop when using gas with ethanol.

Other than that I’m not sure what the difference would be. I don’t think my bed cover would reduce that much wind drag haha.

Who knows for sure unless we drive the same route at the same time ‍

Ran another hwy test with Puksar set in “Stock” mode. Aurora,CO to Boulder 20.3mpg. Then Boulder back to Aurora 19.7mpg (not back to the exact place...just a few miles from original starting point)

Ride up had light traffic so was able to set cruise control with little interference. Ride back had more traffic so speed varied a bit more. But again, I’m very pleased with the numbers

Managed to get 15.8 running 70-74 on the way back which was pretty impressive over 3/4 of a tank. I was knocking down around 17-18 at 70 on the flat sections of LA and MS. Any sort of grade at all or wind drops me back down to 13-15 though at this speed.

Sped up and ran 80-83 for about 100 miles in TX, dropped off somewhere in the 11 range probably. Didn’t hand cal that part. Maybe 10. Wasn’t good. Saw a lot of 8 and 9 on the dash.

So as most everyone probably knows, speed is a huge factor when you have so much extra rolling resistance.

I can’t even imagine making the same trip on my other wheels, it would be horrendous.

A big contributor to your high mpg with 35s is the lightweight nature of the ultra terrain. 35x12.5r20 weighs 60 pounds which is unheard of for a tire of that size
