Rear window surround crack.

Update: I got my truck back yesterday. The replacement part # is 68426398AC for the backlite. I’m disappointed that it’s not the part # ending in ‘AD’, but good enough for now. Hopefully, it’s fixed for good. View attachment 83935
Update: I just noticed my rear window is leaking again. This was just replaced a few weeks ago. The headache continues...Maybe it’s time to trade in my Ram.

Did they replace the 3rd brake light with a NEW Part # ending in AF or AG and change the screws to the new updated torx bolts/screws ?

3rd brake light is also a big issue Ram has with leaks..... I would tape off the 3rd Brake light if it hasn't been replaced and water test it.....

I wonder if allot of these leaks are being misdiagnosed and as a result the wrong part is being replaced ? It's easy to find the water after it's in, but hard to find how it's getting in.

I guess it depends on the nature of the leak. It's not hard to miss some of these window frame cracks, and mine was so bad you cold pretty much see through it and watch the water come in. That's not to say my 3rd brake light isn't also leaking, but it's pretty clear my window will have to be replaced. I've read that when it's the 3rd brake light you often get water staining around the headliner, but I haven't noticed that in my truck (yet). I had that issue in my 2010 Ram but I got about 6 years out of the original seal before I started having issues.

Kathryn,

I just took my truck into the dealer today for this issue on my 2019. I'm out of warranty by ~3k miles. About 600 of those miles have been driving back and forth to the dealer to fix other warranty issues, or for the dealer test driving to diagnose steering issues. I was informed there was a tech bulletin on the issue, but the dealer couldn't confirm it would be covered. What is Ram's position on taking care of customers with these known issues, but technically outside of warranty? I asked the dealer to pull my vehicle history since I bought it new in 2019, but walked away without that data as of this morning. I'd say it's 8-10 visits to fix 6 separate warranty issues over the last two years...

I'd like to know, as well.

I may be in the same position (rear window replaced once within 3/36 FCA new vehicle warranty). I also have the FCA extended warranty (which I've heard may not cover repair). I would like to know FCAs position on this.

A bit of good news today.....My Ram Cares case worker called to say the dealership should be receiving my replacement window a week earlier than originally planned, so hopefully I'll be good to go next week. Fingers crossed this fixes the issue long term and not just until I'm out of warranty.

Is there a thread regarding what the FCA extended warranty does and doesn't cover? I wonder what IS covered if this window issue is not.

Went to the dealer today so they can take pics and order parts for my second window replacement. They said I was the first to have the replacement fail.

They admit this a major issue with FCA right now. You would think they would have it figured out by now.

Phenomenal! At the car wash tonight and son said he was washing the seat, I looked back and see drops of water on the seat back.

Saw this thread, realized it was 80 pages….and my gap is nearly a 1/16” on the cracked plastic above the power sliding window and it looks like I should probably wait another few revisions based on the last few comments; 3rd brake light is on AF looks like the rear window is on AE

Anyone know exactly where it’s leaking in from, ideally with a picture, if it’s not the 3rd brake light or antenna?

Contemplating if there’s a viable silicone option vs having the truck 1/2 torn apart only to be “mostly” reassembled.

Thanks,

Dallas

Took the truck in today and the moment the tech opened the door and looked in he said "Yup it's the surround." Snapped a few pictures and told me to get a case escalation going if I wanted any hope of having a new piece any time soon. He also mentioned that this is not a solely RAM issue as he knows techs that work on other brands mentioning the same exact problems, it's probably a supplier QC issue. He expects every single 5th gen, at least, to suffer this problem until the supplier gets smacked around.

The good news is that the moment I brought up water leaking inside on the phone this morning they put in an order for the 3rd brake light replacement, they are doing those at the same time now to be safe.

Not sure about a thread specifically for FCA extended warranty. I suspect it's going to come down to the FCA customer support specialist we work with and if they "authorize" the repair, and of course, the dealership.

I'm good through November 18, 2021 and/or another 9k miles. I have the 5/100k Maximum Care, and here is a pic of, "will not cover", Exterior section.
Back (1993'ish I believe) when most (if not all big 3) drivetrain warranties lined up with 3/36, I had a Ford Explorer blow a transmission at ~38k, tried to work with Ford (pay for all or supplement repair cost), wrote customer service (multiple times) and finally told them I'd never own a Ford again...and I haven't - I chose to never buy a Ford product due to this...FCA/Ram may steer me back to GM if they refuse to stand by their products as Ford chose not to. As consumers, we have a choice-sure someone else will fall in line behind me, but it's my choice.

Yeah, almost nowhere to run. Seems like they all are problematic these days. Even US built "imports".

My wife's transmission on her for Ford Escape crapped the bed at 90K. All highway, no towing.

Apply flowable silicone along the top of the rear glass as it is not a structural issue. There are posts showing pictures of this, and where the leaks are coming from. If my rear window trim did eventually crack and start leaking, I would do the above rather than have the truck torn apart, damaged, and potentially have to repeat the process since the replacement glass seems to of the same design as original.

I went through all 80 pages and it looks like this cracked window surround issue is mostly affecting 2019 models, and some 2020s.
My dealership said that they have not seen any 2021s with this problem.
I looked at mine and saw absolutely no issue, no stress mark, no discoloration...I will keep an eye on it though
I maybe missed it but did anyone with 2021 model year experience this?

I’m still waiting on the new 3rd brake light. I don’t have an eta on when I’ll get it. The headliner is completely dry so I don’t believe it’s the 3rd brake light. I’ll know more on Monday.

My headliner was dry and it was the 3rd brake light, but my truck is parked on a slope driveway ..... Maybe that's why my headliner was dry ???
