I have a 4x4 1500 with the 3.92 rear end and axle lock. My truck has developed a high pitched whine between 1500-2000 rpms and my dealer says it's normal for that setup. They opened it up to see if there were any shaving it was clean, then they changed the fluid and nothing changed. The service manager took me for a ride another 1500 with the same rear end and it also howled, do any other members have this same issue? Was it fixed or were you told it was normal?

Mine’s quiet in almost all circumstances. Are you hearing it all the time at that RPM, or just when hot (e.g. towing)?

My truck is in the shop for a whine at 46-50 mph on throttle only. It's a 4x2 with the 3.92 rear gear. I was told today their tech support said it's normal and they had test driven a similar Laramie and it had the same whine at the same speed. Picking it up tomorrow and see how it goes. Only 400 miles on the truck. Your issue may be different not sure. Mine is repeatable every time at 46-50 mph on throttle only. Annoying but not horrible.

Still have whine from 46-50 mph ( audible).
It's starting to drive me nuts. Other than that the truck is great. Although the dealership said it was "normal" I'm taking to another dealership soon to have it looked at again.
Always on throttle it happens in the range above. Anyone else notice this?

Thanks

A properly set up differential should not make noise. That said, some gear sets can be problematic getting them 100% quiet. Generally those are/were aftermarket gear sets, not factory. So anyone that says a gear whine is normal, is mistaken.

A whine or howl at certain speeds on light/cruising throttle is generally ring and pinion. Noise on accel is generally rear pinion bearing. Noise on decel is generally front pinion bearing.

Anything more than maybe a very, very light howl (r&p) at a certain speed is an indicator that set up is out of spec. Some gear sets you cannot get completely quiet, although it is rare.
