Question for this forum of GREATNESS: I want to modify the rear brake lines on my 5th gen to create extra clearance for my snow chains. The rear brake lines are way too close for comfort when running chains (see pictures). I want to modify this connection into the brake calipers to give greater clearance without affecting its intended ability to articulate with the suspension. Do you have any links, ideas, or guidance?
Context and Background: I run a 2022 RAM 1500 Limited Longhorn with 18" Raceline wheels (same as stock backspace and offset, just smaller wheels) and LT295/70R18 BFG KO3 tires (dimensions in inches = 34.3" dia, 11.8" section width. The suspension is stock except for Bilstein 5100 shocks front & rear. The front shocks are slightly pre-loaded and raise the front of the truck ~ ¾". I currently use a bungee cord to "pull" the brake line toward the interior of the axel, giving more space- but I do not like this solution. I have only used it for very short distances.
Disclaimer: Please read this before replying with anything snotty...for reasons unknown to me, the words "snow chains" invoke some unhelpful feedback. I know there are many differing opinions on what is needed, wanted, required, or possible....I am aware and humbled by your greatness when driving up Mount Everest without getting stuck while the expert climbers watched in awe...etc...and so on...Also, the owner's manual guidance is to use S (slim)-Series chains to avoid hitting this line, so it isn't really an "issue" except for rigs like mine.
These are all the other snow chain-related links I could find on this forum (please update me if I am missing any):
- Are chains allowed on my vehicle? Are tire chains allowed on my vehicle?
- Chains changed to narrower tires what about Class-S? Chains? Changed to narrower tires; what about Class "S"?
- Tire Chains Questions? Tire chains questions
Photo 1: pic from behind the passenger rear wheel looking forward. You see the flexible brake line hose is ~½" from the side wall. You can also see where the snow chains sit (although these chains are not tensioned yet, so would likely sit a little lower (towards the wheel) once all said and done.
Photo 2: My truck on a mostly level parking lot. Only posting it for others to see what this setup looks like. Unrelated to this question, I am unhappy with the bed drop from my topper and tools in the back. I will address that with some CargoMAXX HD springs in the future, but that will be discussed later.
