Problems filling gas tank

I've had a lot of issues with this at different gas stations. At Costco I have to hold the handle the whole time at a certain angle. Other gas stations I have to hold the handle the whole time also. I have to find the right angle. It's a real pain in the you know what.

Each nozzle has a little hole near the tip, most of the time on the bottom. When that little hole gets covered by gas, it trips the auto shut-off. Seems like our trucks do not allow the gas to drain away fast enough. Maybe has to do with the 2 flaps you have to push thru. I usually end up just holding the pump trigger 1/2 way. Longer to fill to full but doesn't keep shutting off.
This issue isn't exclusive to the Ram. I've had this issue with other vehicles over the years. I've found that not jamming the nozzle all the way in and not pumping at max speed does the trick. I'll put the nozzle all the way in and then withdraw just a bit. I hold the trigger about 3/4 instead of at full lock. I've been doing it for so long it's second nature, and I haven't had any issues with filling my Ram.
A fun little science experiment for everyone to demonstrate how venting helps.
Take two bottles and fill them with water (or any liquid for that matter). Challenge a friend to see who can empty the bottle fastest. They'll tip theirs over (unless they know this trick) and it glugs out. If you tip yours and then give it a spin like you're making a whirlpool, it will gush out much faster. The air can vent into the bottle through the center of the vortex and the flow won't be slowed by the glug of air coming in.
This is the same concept as shotgunning a beer for all of you who had a different college experience than I did (I was the stick in the mud that studied on weekends). The hole in the end of the can allows it to vent and the beer leaves the can faster.
So if you allow a small gap at the mouth of the filler neck instead of sealing it off with the nozzle, air will be able to vent, and the gas will flow into the tank faster. This should prevent the pump from detecting a full tank when it's not.
I suspect that's probably the issue. That's why pumping slower, and/or not fully seating the nozzle works. The slower drainage rate resulting from pressure is probably also why you can pump more after waiting a few seconds. The fuel has time to drain out of the neck. Or vent it like you do and solve the problem.

Had same issue on my 2019. Had to have tank replaced, plus sensor re-assessed and configured. It was an issue with the sensor in the neck of the gas tank. Something that cannot be replaced without replacing the entire tank.

I have had zero issues filling my truck. If it was a problem with getting the fuel to flow I to the tank fast enough, it would effect every truck

Same here. There is no reason to have to fiddle with the fuel nozzle in order to refuel your vehicle. Period.
How did a senor in the truck effect the gas pump? Was it protruding into the neck or something? That sounds weird, but also could explain why not everyone has the problem.

Not sure about the above, but mine was a stuck rollover valve in the tank. There is not any type of sensor in the filler neck of my vehicle.

Interesting experience I just had. I’ve had some problems with this before too. I got fuel today at a different station that normal just because I was there. Decided to put the neck only like 60% in. Worked great until it didn’t shut off at all. It over filled until I manually shut it off and had it all over my shoes
That's usually a pump issue. Should have reported it to the attendant inside
I have the same gas filling issue. Tried different gas stations, position of the nozzle, depth of the nozzle, and rate of which gas is flowing into the tank. Twice in the past couple of weeks it took me 15 minutes to fill my tank while I hold the handle and trickle the gas in. This is after the dealer did some fixes that they knew might help this issue. I can put up with this to a certain extend while the weather is still nice but when it goes below zero and this is happening it won’t be fun. Took back to the dealer and they had another 2020 in with the same issue so they called Ram and was told that they have a new gas tank with the rollover valve I believe now external verses internal and is supposed to correct this issue. They ordered in a couple tanks but are on backorder.

My wifes 2018 jeep has same issue as it has the capless tank…I turn the fuel pump upside down and it pumps and fills completely fine. Might be some truth to this.

I would guess that flipping it upside down moves the auto shutoff hole to the top so fuel has more time to drain away and not trip it until it is actually full.
My 2020 Ram Laramie 5.7 started having filling issues last week, it would take anywhere from 2/10ths to 1/2 gallon before it would shut the valve off. My truck just turned 32,000 miles last week and I've had no other issues with the truck. It would take me 15 minutes to put in 10 gallons. Took to my dealer today, after having my truck all day they finally called and told me they were ordering a new tank for it but it would not be in til next week if I'm lucky. Asked the service manager why they were replacing the tank, his answer, and I quote. "We didn't drop the tank and I'll know more once we do".

I had the same issue with my 19. Tank replacement solved the problem. Most dealers are now aware it's the rollover valve in the tank that's causing most of the filling issues. Others have been reporting low count cases of stuck check valves within the fuel pump assembly, some with collapsed vent ports within fuel filler neck, and raw fuel saturation within the EVAP charcoal canisters.

Here in California the pump nozzles have an electrical cut-off switch that demands the vapor cover be fitted completely over the receptacle. This is the thing that most often causes me trouble in filling the tank. I travel all over pulling an RV, so I see a lot of various gas station pumps and nozzles. The only times I've had any problem whatever filling the tank on my 2021 Laramie 5.7 is in CA with the cutoff switches. The result of opening that switch is identical to to having the tank get full and backing up to the nozzle. If I didn't know about the switch, I'd swear it was because fuel was backing up.
Consider me lucky. At 14k miles, this truck is as perfect a vehicle as I've ever owned in 60 years of owning. I love it. Had to loan it to my daughter and her husband a few days ago, and dreaded it! The son-in-law stopped for gas and told me he couldn't get the tank full. He doesn't know about the "special" California pump nozzles.

Add me to the list of effected owners. Just bought a used 2021 Laramie with 8500mi. I can't hold the pump trigger more than 1/8 max or it will kick off. Very frustrating to click on/off dozens of times. First vehicle I've ever had do this and I'm 49.

I've only filled mine 3 times so far but the last time just about an hour ago the pump kept shutting off when I was trying to fill the tank (it was just above half). Probably shut off about 6-7 times maybe? 800 miles on the truck. I'll see if this continues to happen.
