Power running board decided not to stow, tore off carport pillar

Title says it all. Jumped in my limited, shut the door, turned car on and idled for about 30 seconds and started slowly backing out. CRACK!

I didn't see any solutions in posts I looked through, but it looks like the only thing that really needs to be replaced is the two brackets that hold the board to the mechanical part that deploys/stows. Running board itself is fine, and the arms that extend appear to be fine.

Anywhere to find just the brackets? I've come up empty. I've got the platinum warranty, would it by any miracle be covered under that? (I'm just making the assumption it doesn't cover dumb ***)

If it happened because the board failed to stow properly, and not because you manually deployed it, shouldn’t this be a warranty claim (if not an insurance claim) against FCA?

Anytime the boards are deployed, either manually or automatic they "should" retract when the truck is put in gear. Mine sometimes have a delay when they deploy automatically, such as opening the drivers door. This defect seems to be what caused your problem and something I'd expect FCA to cover.

In tight spots I like to manually deploy the boards to ensure they retract when I put the truck in gear. I've never experienced the boards delaying in retracting when manually deployed.

Best,

Matt

Hi Jnuke,

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you! If you plan to address this with your dealer, please let us know via private message. We would be more than happy to escalate a case on your behalf to provide you with a case specialist for additional support during that process.

Thanks for the replies! They were encouraging. I called my dealer to make a claim and set a service appointment for the end of October. Hopefully all goes well!

Just found your post. I started a similar thread because when I searched nothing came up.

My sidesteps do this as well. Sometimes they do not retract after self-deploying until I'm a few hundred feet to a quarter mile down the road.

I can't figure out any rhyme or reason for this. I'm afraid that someday I'll snag one on a curb and damage it as you did.

How did you make out getting it repaired? Is there a flash for the logic? Obviously there is a bug in the programming.

The times mine don't retract is when I start the truck while they are in the process of retracting. It'll stop the process and leave them out. If you are starting the truck and someone opens a passenger door the boards will not deploy. Just a thing you need to get used to. Make sure you wait for the boards to retract before you start the truck. I can cause them to stay deployed at will by starting the truck as soon as I hit the seat.

Thanks, that's good to know. I really didn't notice any pattern to it.

I know that one time I got in the truck and started playing around with my squeaky center console armrest, then started the truck and the sidestep was still deployed. That was probably about a minute or so before starting....

Was the door closed completely? Did the same one day when child didn’t shut door all the way they stayed out.
