Poor gas mileage

I hand calculate mine also and find that the difference between my MPG and what the on board MPG says varies from .2 to .5. With the on board being higher than my hand calculations. I am going to start waiting 30 seconds after the nozzle first shuts off and then pump until it shuts off again. My thinking is this will help with those gas pumps that shutoff early or late. I saw this done by some website to compare mileage on different truck brands, but I can’t recall which one it was.

I also hand calculate every tank which comes out to be .5 mpg lower (or a little less) than what the truck tells me.

That's pretty good considering that I take total miles driven and divide by how much go-juice I pumped compared to the truck that compares a bunch of sensors every XXX milliseconds of engine run time for 400+ miles and makes an educated guess.

My only advice is hammer it to get to speed and drive normal once at speed. I used to baby mine to speed and that sucked badly. Now I drive like a man to speed and I average 14-14.5 in town and low 20s on the interstate.

I'm about to cross over 1,000 miles on my Ram and have been averaging out around 19mpg. Not too bad, but I do notice it drops fast above 72mph.

That's about like me, if I don't spend too much time idling. Hemis do get thirsty at 70 mph.

Newbie here. My 2007 4x4 Ram with Hemi was averaging around 12mpg. My new 2021 4x2 Laramie is averaging 12.3mpg, mostly city driving. I only have about 200 miles on my 2021, but very disappointed in the gas mileage as I too have been driving like a granny since I got it!

so this is weird 2 days ago i hit 3640 miles & it was like a light switch turned on for the first 3600 miles i got 12.4 average mpg now in the same tank of fuel ,same driving rout the lie -o - meter is saying 16.5 mixed driving and im getting 32 mpg in eco mode at 55 mph flat land WOW i hope this stays true once i hand calc. does anyone know for sure if their is something in the software that runs these trucks rich for a break in period. because this large jump happened over night .

Yeah I've noticed city driving kills my MPG's very quick. I go from averaging 19-20ish down to 17 in a matter of miles.

Yup. Even idling at a drive through I will lose .3 mpg or more

You'll should of got etorque. I lose nothing at stop lights. I average 16.8 in town & 19.8 on the freeway. If I go on country roads & stay under 60 I can get 22 mpg. I also got the 3.92's I bet with the 3.21 I'd get 2 mpg better on the freeway.

I would have gotten an eTorque except in 2019 it was a $1200 option, not the $200 option it is now.

i got the 321 gears but also the bigger bed air suspension & sun roof & 22 " rims all adds weight . im happy with the non etorque the one on the dealer lot wouldnt start for a testdrive so that put up a red flag for me

I got the eTorque and LOVE it! Agreed that it is more expensive stuff to break, but I talked the dealer into giving me a 5 year bumper-bumper warranty and I’ll likely trade in prior to 5 years.

Just returned from my first road trip with a brand new RAM 1500 Limited Longhorn with the standard 3.6L V6 gas engine, 3.21 ratio. Estimate total load of around 600 pounds included self, wife, bikes, normal road trip stuff (not towing anything). The truck had less than 500 miles when we set out from the California Bay area to the San Juan Islands in Washington State, with stops at points in between.

Total Distance: 2,293 miles

Average MPG (actual): 18.4 MPG
Average MPG (reported by RAM trip computer): 18.3 MPG

Average speed: 46 MPH.
Typical highway cruising speed: 60 – 75 MPH

MPG varied from 16.8 to 20.6 per fill up. No clear trend. Variation probably caused by going up/down Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, variation in speed, etc. as well as percentage of ethanol (0 to 10%).

Overall, considering the comfort and utility of the truck, I am very satisfied with the mileage. Sure, it is worse than my wife's Prius, but try driving that on a 2,000+ mile roadtrip and maintaining good humor the entire time. Plus I would have probably left the bikes at home, and that makes the trip so much more fun!
