Out of warranty.. what now? Lol

I don't buy extended warranties. I'm insured with Geico and have their MBI (mechanical breakdown insurance). It costs $48 for six months in California and has a $250 deductible per claim. Claims can have multiple items on the claim at the same time and are covered under one deductible, not one for each. I recently took my out of warranty vehicle in for service for three items. Parksense was acting up while driving, leaking rear window (second time), and the spring in the overhead console (sunglasses) broke and the door would drop while driving. ALL three were covered by Geico, paid the dealer direct, and for $250 I got the issues taken care of. Peace of mind, knowing that could have easily been a blown engine rod, took out the block and seized the transmission at the same time and that would have only been $250! initial cost of $96/year cannot be beat.

If you don’t keep them long enough or drive them enough, yep… that works.
Longer ownership, longer mileage, that skews it.

The issues I had on my 2015 were mainly air suspension related.
Sunroof leak, at around 130K water pump, belt, tensioner.
One radio after the 3/36 was up.
Rear end seal, U joints on the rear.
Outer Tie rod ends…
Then small odds and ends that I waited till I had a bigger repair, like faulty window switches, ram box latch that was flaky, etc.

Any advice on what kind of maintenance I could’ve done on my own to prevent any of those?

I average 25-30,000 miles per year and keep vehicles 4-5 years with well over 100,000 miles on them. Wife keeps her vehicles 6-7 years and averages 15,000 miles per year.
Sounds like your repairs were pretty normal wear and tear items. That’s expected and not surprising over 100,000 miles. That’s why when mine get near 120,000 miles I’m ready for an upgrade. Last two RAM’s were absolutely perfect yet at that mileage and felt bad getting rid of them but excited to move into a newer model.

Went this past weekend on a long trip to Kings Canyon National Park. Had a blast and also somewhat of a heart attack with the damn guard-less roads up there up to 6k feet in elevation.. terrible when the sun is blinding you in crazy windy roads but anyway..

My trucks warranty is over midway through the trip and realized I have to be attentive to the trucks maintenance which is nothing new to me so this new journey with my first truck seems pretty good so far.

Crossing my fingers I have no major mechanical issues down the road and that the truck lasts long. (Well over 500k if possible) from how the market is looking this will definitely be my forever truck.

Nothing exciting here just figured I’d jot something down here on the forum. Haha

I also installed the Gator EFX tonneau cover before the trip. Took less than 30 min. To install. Looks great and I’m glad with the overall purchase of the tonneau cover.

Respect that…. Air ride was my biggest problem, started at less than 30K…every other year it was in the shop.
It was beginning to act up again, and I had enough…. And the last time, dealer couldn’t figure out the problem despite lights coming on, compressor failing, etc.

I got the Max care with my 15 close to dealer cost, before all the online dealers were selling it so cheap as a common place.
It more than paid for itself.
You’ve got better luck than me, so even if I never have to use it for this truck, with all the repairs on my last truck covered, I still come out ahead.

Each to his/her own. I'm in the never had an extended warranty, but got one this time category. As a retired EE and having restored several older mopars, know my way around vehicles. However, the complexity of the electronics in current vehicles is beyond what most DIYers, well at least this one, can deal with. The Rebel, except for 2 recall visits (HPFP and emission), has been flawless for 3+ yrs. I'll be happy if I never have to use the EW given my allergy to dealerships, but it's there if needed.

You’ll get 100 different opinions from 100 different folks. It’s all up to the individual as to whether it’s a good deal or not.

The proper way to look at whether you want to purchase an extended warranty boils down to how you feel about gambling on insurance - that’s all this is. You are gambling that the vehicle will experience one or more breakdowns for more than what you paid for the warranty during the coverage period… the company is gambling that the vehicle won’t break down at all during the coverageperiod of the extended warranty. Guess who has the years of statistical research and data points? The company.

That said. Back when I had my 2019 Ram 1500 (2019-2023) I did buy an extended warranty for the first time ever. Couple of reasons -1) my Ram was the first year of the 5th gen so I was reasonably sure I’d experience more glitches than usual. 2) FCA/Stellantis long term reliability just made me nervous. So I bought one from Ziegler (best price by far), for $1460. 8/85k/$200 deductible. However I ended up trading in my Ram in 2023 for a slightly used 2023 Tacoma So I got refunded what I didn’t use.

I will not buy an extended warranty for my Tacoma due to almost the same two reasons.. 1) the 23 Tacomas are the last year of the 3rd gen Tacomas thus the bugs should be all worked out, and 2) legendary Toyota reliability. Believe it or not, a 10/100k/$0 deductible for my Tacoma was even cheaper, at $1360! But I still won’t buy one because I don’t think I’ll ever need it and would much rather have that $1360 in my investment account.

For most people it will not be worth the money. Extended warranties cover the period of time when cars are the most reliable. The primary coverage benefit starts after the manufactures warranty has expired and by then most of the bugs have been worked out. They end before most cars start to deteriorate from high mileage and old age. In the last 40 years I have saved well over $20,000 by not purchasing extended warranties on at least 22 new cars I purchased. My biggest repair bill for a period that would have been covered by an extended warranty was around $600 and total I've not spend more than $2500 on repairs that would have been covered by an extended warranty. I would hate to have to spend $6 - 8K on a new motor or transmission but if I had to for some reason I would still be way ahead.

Extended warranties are not sold for your financial benefit; they are sold to financially benefit those who sell the warranties. The cost of an extended warranty is only worth it to those selling the warranty.
