Oil Leak??

Cripes, what a bunch of work for a nuisance noise. Good tech.
Reminds me of an old 2nd hand story, back in 1973 I had a neighbor who always wanted a black 4 dr Sedan De Ville, circa 1967-69. He found one from the original owner. The older guy told him that for a few months after purchase he was hearing a “rattle-clunck” from the left ft door area when he turned a corner or went over a bump. He got tired of it and took it into the Caddy dealer. They removed the door panel and found a Coke bottle with a steel ball bearing and a note inside. The note read: “finally found it you rich s.o.b.”...
The sad thing is, I've heard stories like that before.

In my case, it was either an acvident that somebody dropped it in and was to lazy to retrieve the bolt or a disgruntled employer threw it in.

It drove me crazy until I was brave enough to bring the truck into the dealer to find out what it was.

I ended up getting a scratched center console which they had to replace (of course, they let me find it and didn't say anything) and a scratched door panel which is still on back order.

But you have to hand it to the tech. He took all that apart and got it all back together without any squeaks or rattles.
 
Leak was from the oil change, I finally looked underneath. All fine now, no drips to be seen.

Happy for you, one less grief/concern in your life. Did you clean it up or did it just stop? Looks cleaner/brighter than my 3 step job (11,500 miles). I think the 2nd oil changer was not that ambitious.

That's a great picture (post 42) for first time oil changers. It's up there somewhere!
Also, for those not familiar, it can be reached from the front side and back side at the same time. You can get both hands on the filter that way. Not bad putting it back on (filled filter with oil and 3/4 turn by hand after contact). Did my first oil change yesterday and was apprehensive after reading comments on the forum. Cup style filter didn't work for me as there was no room to get my ratchet on and I had no plan B tool to fit. I found the metal strap style worked with a little finesse to get it off. Hopefully next time the "bag" works for me and I will not have oil running down my hand and arm. In addition I plan to use the KN HP-1017 with the nut on the filter. I also tried wrapping and covering parts with aluminum foil. Worked well for the plug (chute formed from cross bar) but need to be more conscientious with placement on the filter area.

Just read through this Thread and I appreciate all the great advice on here from the guys that have figured out the best way of changing the oil on these trucks! Reading about the difficult in getting the factory filter off would something like the below make it easier to get it off or is there not enough room to get it onto the filter and turn it to get it loose? Ordered the K&N Filter and the Pennzoil Platinum (on sale from Amazon for $19.99, Thanks For the Heads up on this too) for the replacement which sounds like it will make the next change easier to do.

Alright for 12 bucks I will give em a shot and report back. Truck only has 1200 miles on it now but I plan on changing it at 3000 miles since I read another post that reported high amounts of metals in the oil after the 1st change.

I changed mine at 3,000+. Just finished talking to my neighbor (BMW mechanic) about this. He would have changed it sooner. I believe my Honda Accord or Honda Civic specifically said not to change the oil early. Lot of controversy. This topic is similar to how to drive for the "break in" period.
 
Mine is leaking quite a bit of oil, enough that I notice it on the garage floor after 30 minutes of it sitting. Dealer put dye in the oil to track down where the oil is coming from, I’ll be bringing it back next week.
 
Here’s what it looked like 2 days after the dealer washed and cleaned the underside.

Bringing this thread back too life. Anyone else have these issues? i took it into the dealer for what i thought was a rear main seal leak. Upon further investigation, tech says oil is coming from front seal (crankcase seal maybe?) running down the engine and gathering and dripping from between engine/tranny bellhousing. Dealer ordered part and will be repaired by monday evening. So i guess we shall see.
 
I had mine fixed several months ago, I thought it was the real main seal. Turns out it was running from the front of the engine to the rear, Dealer replaced the timing cover seal and haven’t had the issue since. They also replaced the drivechaft because I was getting a small leak out of the rear of the transfer case, tech said they don’t replace just the seals so they put a whole new driveshaft in it.
 
They may have meant timing cover seal. They just told me front seal. I don't care as long as its fixed. Only been a day and already miss my truck. Ha

Dealer cleaned the spot before I picked it up and told me it was just residue. It was squeaky clean when I picked it up, I crawled under it and looked. Now... this a few days later. I believe this to be a rear main seal leak. Case reopened with FCA, emails off to dealer mgt and we're back to the service dept. Again.
anyword on your oil leak, I have a 2019 Ram limited with same issue!
 
Hi everyone,

I’m new here and have been creeping on these threads for the last week or so. I just bought a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic SLT 5.7 and I’ve already had to have the rear main replaced for an oil leak. The truck was preowned and had 15,000 miles on it before we purchased it but they carfax shows no negatives on the truck at all. I noticed the oil drips two days after the truck was home brought it back and a couple of days later it had the rear main replaced.After driving it for about 60 miles in 90 degree weather, the truck has started dripping again from the same location as before. I called the dealership and the service manager stated it was just assembly lube and to expect some dripping for a few days. Is this normal? And is this what assembly lube would look like? The undercarriage is dirty, so the color in the photo is a little inaccurate. The fluid is very thin and slick with no smell and very very light yellow tint to it. Any idea what it could be? I really hate to have these issues on a truck I just purchased but I guess that’s what I get for going preowned :( thank you all so much for your help!
