Really hoping this is just some extra assembly oil weeping out. I noticed this the other day and wiped it and there is more there now.

I think all my gen 4's (3) had that area that would get wet, never a drip though.I always change my oil myself, I alway cleaned it off not wanting to take it in unless it gets bad. I agree that seems to be a leak.

Between the trans bellhousing and engine? I have heard about extra assembly lube coming out near that area for the first bit and it does look a little dark to be oil. Definitely keep an eye on it and if that spot keeps getting wet you'll want to take it in to get looked at.

Since many of you have 4th Gen Hemi experience, is it a leak-free engine as any modern one should be? I was just assuming they would be.

Hope you're right. Going in Monday for the clunk and I'll add this to the agenda.

Changed the oil on my truck 2 days ago and looked everywhere underneath it. Completely dry everywhere 2 years and 40k kms later. Didn't even use a drop in my 10k oil change interval.

Yes, really leak free. I have had 3 Gen 4 and one gen 3, never any leaks, other than the above area getting kinda wet, but never dripping. My 13 needed a water pump at about 80k, leaking where it mounted, not the seal in the pump.

Be advised that the fluid for ZF/Chrysler transmissions DOES NOT use a red dye.

Dealer cleaned the spot before I picked it up and told me it was just residue. It was squeaky clean when I picked it up, I crawled under it and looked. Now... this a few days later. I believe this to be a rear main seal leak. Case reopened with FCA, emails off to dealer mgt and we're back to the service dept. Again.

Looking at your photo it seems odd that if the rear main seal was leaking you'd see something coming out of the weep hole. But it looks dry in the picture.

Weep hole is dry. I’m concerned that the corner of the seal was either defective or pinched and is leaking there and nowhere else

Yes, unlike 2 BMWs, my 3 HEMI vehicles have all been free of any oil or transmission leaks, and I sold all of those around the 7/8 year mark still leak free.

175,000 kilometres on my 21013 hemi, tiled garage floor-not one drip of oil.

I just noticed this afternoon that i have some residue in the same location. How did the dealer end up handling the issue?

Major invasive surgery. Rear main seal leak. Basically, the whole drive train had to be disassembled to perform the repair. My truck was out of service for weeks. Has not leaked again since I got it back but what a disappointment this thing has been. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hopefully yours is just assembly oil, mine wasn’t. It kept seeping out after wiping it multiple times.

I have a yellowish grease coming from mine in that area. It doesn't look, feel or smell like any motor, transmission or gear oil that I've ever encountered. It does look, feel and smell like grease though. Tried to get a picture of the little pin it appears to be applied to inside the bellhousing itself. The picture where it's very apparent was an 80 degree evening after an hour long commute, whereas the drier looking pictures are more recent, when it's been 45 degrees and the car is cold. I did not wipe anything beyond what I needed to in order to catch some on my finger to give it a smell.

The best way I can describe it is sticky/tacky, a metallic smell, and fairly thick. Reminds me a lot of what's in the little grease capsules that the Government used to supply to the military, for lubing firearms back in the day.

I fondly remember those little cans of grease for the M1 Garrand and M1 Carbine.

I'm not sure I can offer much except to advise you that the transmission fluid used in the 8 speed series (8HP70, 8HP75, 8HP90, and 850RFE) is a greenish-yellow color. It is NOT red. Whether that's what you're seeing or not I can't tell. My recommendation is to have the service department inspect and note about this on an invoice for the record.

Best regards,
Dusty

I made an appointment for tomorrow morning. Blacklight reveals a dye, so it's not oil or assembly lube. Thanks for your reply!

Yours looks very dark - more like oil. Mine was greenish yellow and had a sticky/tacky feel. Ever since I wiped the small amount I still had on mine off last week, it has not returned. I think mine was either some kind of grease that would heat up and turn runny, or the excess transmission fluid getting spit out of the vent/breather hole as it heated up and expanded. Yours looks like motor oil, and I would definitely get it checked out. Mine reacted to UV light - might be a quick way to check yours at home, the oil should not react.
