Hi. I'm new here. The only truck I've ever owned was a 2003 Dodge Dakota with V8 that I bought used with 115k on it back in 2011 for a couple grand. Nice beater truck. I used it occasionally for winter snow driving, hauling wood, dirt and gravel. I live in Buffalo, NY so we are used to heavy snowfall ("lake effect") and wanted a cheap 4WD commuter for during snow storms instead of driving my Accord. But we haven't had any really bad winters for awhile, so it didn't get much use and basically rusted to death while it sat under my lean to. I finally got rid of it earlier this year for parts.

But I want back into a truck, so I've been looking into buying a 2021/2022 1500 Big Horn for a couple weeks now. I started with a Tradesman, went to a dealership, test drove a 2020 with the 5.7 Hemi and loved it. And they showed me that with all the options I wanted it would be cheaper to get a Big Horn. Today I went to the dealership to order my new build, and they told me RamBoxes are no longer available on the Big Horn at all. On any trim. That is a deal breaker for me. It's not available on any of them right now due to the ongoing manufacturing shortages they said. I'm pretty bummed about it. RamBoxes and the incredible interior of the RAM 1500s were what helped me settle on a RAM over the other brands in the first place (although I never really seriously considered a Ford).

So my options are to forget the RamBoxes and go ahead with everything else, assuming no other problems, or wait until/if RamBoxes ever become available again.

My question is: should I wait? They said try back about this time next year. Grrr.

First, welcome to the forums. 👍

As far as Ramboxes go... I don't know anything about availability, but I can only say that we use ours all the time and I don't really ever want another truck without them.

Hi grim! Thanks for the reply. How does it affect your bed size? Do you notice any limitations in the reduced width of the bed?

Hi Richard320. I did that. I found a very similar built model in Montana...lol. It has RamBoxes but pretty much nothing else I want, unfortunately.

I have been purchasing Hondas since the 1990's, and I have to say, I am not very impressed with RAM sales people AT ALL in my experience so far. None of them seem very interested in meeting the needs of the customer. If I am going to spend $50,000 to $60,000 on a new vehicle, I want it the way that I want it. I don't think that's unreasonable. I have tried looking around at other dealership websites, and they all want your contact information before they will even answer any questions.

No Ramboxes would be a no go for me. I didn’t have them on my 4th Gen… and wish I did and that was one reason I went ahead and decided to upgrade to a 5th Gen equipped how I wanted instead of settling. Love them wouldn’t get another truck without them unless I change careers.

The bed size is more than adequate for what I need. 4 x 8 sheets of plywood, sheet rock or whatever still lay flat between the bed walls. Anything that won't fit in the bed, such as our side x side, gets trailered anyway.

Hi tacokiller,
Welcome to the forum from another member from Buffalo! Back in 2018, I ordered my Ram from Rich Perry (Commercial/Fleet Manager) at West-Herr Dodge Ram in Orchard Park. Rich is a great person!

RamBoxes are worth the wait. They are IMMENSELY useful. I use them 10-1 over the actual truck bed. Roomy and well sealed. Part (only a part) of why RAM is the truck to buy bar-none over the competition.

I ordered mine with Ramboxes, so I'm pretty sure they are still building them. But I think there are less around because they need chips, and during the past year the dealers haven't been ordering trucks to sit on the lot with Ramboxes. There is at least 1 Laramie with Ramboxes on the Mark Dodge site. And the cost is about the same as a Big Horn.

Hi Jim! That was where I was at today: West Herr Dodge Ram in OP. Wasn't dealing with Rich though. What I don't understand is why they can't order it, get it into the queue, and build it when the parts finally come in? I got the impression they didn't even want to order new ones, like I was pulling teeth. They keep saying "I can count on one hand how many people have ever asked for a Crew Cab with a 6'4" bed."

And I care, why? I want what I want. The short beds are too small for me. And I have a family. The 5thGens have super nice interiors now. One of the main reasons I want a RAM in the first place.

And I can only assume if I try to find a used one, I'm going to get bitten by the super inflated prices of used vehicles due to the shortages. Plus I will have to "settle" for a vehicle with either options I don't want or missing options I wanted. I did that with my current vehicle 9 years ago. Not doing that again.

If you want the 6’4” bed in the 5th Gen 1500 then you are out of luck with having Ramboxes. They have never offered Ramboxes with the “long bed” in the 1500 with the new platform. If you want the 6’ bed and ramboxes then you would need to move up to the 2500.

BTW, I love my crew cab “long bed”. I hated the 5’7”. At least I can put a 6’ step ladder in and close the tailgate.

I did try building a 2500. They are on the build site, but 1. the luxury options I want are not all available for the 2500, and 2. they told me Ramboxes are not available in ANY new build, due to the shortage.
