NEW GUY WITH TOWING QUESTION? NEED SOME ANSWERS FASTLY.

OK...plan is to do some traveling. Out west, up north west, bring a golf cart or a Harley. Buying a toy hauler. I found a 2016 Winnebago 28SC last night. Great condition, stored inside, used twice. GVR is 8100 or so. My new 2019 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 5.7 and 3:92 axle is supposed to be able to tow 11400 max...as long as I dont weigh it down too much and hit the max I should be ok...Rrrrright?

You will probably run into payload issues with a trailer that big. Tongue weight is usually 10% which would be over 800lbs, which won’t leave you with much payload for passengers, cargo in the bed etc. Take off another 100+ lbs for the weight distribution hitch and your close to 1000lbs.

What is the dryweight of the trailer? Add the weight of the Harley or golf cart to that and figure 10%+ of that is your tongue weight.

Subtract that from your payload rating and that’s what you have left for passengers, snacks cargo in the bed etc.

It looks like that trailer has a dryweight of 8600 lbs and a gvwr of 12000lbs, so I’m guessing it’s a bit to big. You can tow it, but will it be legal/safe? I’m not sure.

OK...looks like I need a smaller trailer...yes...I just did all the math, dry weigh of trailer (8600) then add weight of gas,(, 60 gal) cart, (984) fuel(378) water (830), gear, food, stores \(500+), propane (60) and a few unknowns ...comes to 11352lbs of my Max towing capacity of 11370 lbs... leaves 18 lbs for me, the wife, 3 dogs and all the gear in the truck...tongue weight around 1135 lbs...NOPE, I'd need a 2500 or a dually...

Ya, a half ton will almost always run out of cargo capacity (which includes tongue weight) before running out of tow rating.

my trucks max towing is 9710 and cargo capacity is 1324. So if the tongue weight is 971 lbs that leaves 353 lbs for anything that goes into the truck.

Keep this in mind. The max towing number is figured with only these allowances. 300lbs for passenger/cargo, 70lbs for hitch and only 10% tongue weight

A toy hauler will have much more than 10% tongue weight.

I have the same spec truck as you. I pull a 35’ TT (Non-Toy-hauler but 2 large slides with a GVWR of 9,900 lbs. I’ve done math and assumed a 1000lb loaded tongue weight and show I hit my max payload if I put a few hundred lbs in the bed. I’m prolly underestimating and need to scale...

I’ve added Timber Grove airbags and in my experience I can tow fairly well, one-hand on the wheel at times, but two-hands and focused at others. When maxed-out these 1/2 tons are much more sensitive to road and wind conditions than bigger trucks.

I’ve pulled a few thousand mi. now with no issues other than some occasional rough bumps and porpoising. Just get the bags and hitch right, stay aware, and stay steady...

Had to break the news that I was not buying their TH...the WInnie was just too big...looking at a Puma 27 now thats nearly 2000 less dry weight. Hopefully that would make a difference. NOt new to towing, towed my 28' 9k boat from Virginia to MASS/NH for Stripers and to Fla for blue water...it was nearly 40' OAL with tongue, bracket and motors.

Those look good. But do not buy using the UVW. You need to look at the GVWR...that will be the weight you will be closer too.

The length of the trailer will be a good size also. You won't have to be picky about sites and the towing experience will be better
