Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some advice on a battery issue I’ve been dealing with recently.

I own a 2019 RAM 1500, and up until a few weeks ago, the battery was working fine. My driving habits have changed—I now only drive on weekends, covering short distances most of the time. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

A few weeks ago, I took my truck to a car wash. Due to the queue, I had to start and stop the truck multiple times. After the wash, the truck wouldn’t crank, and the battery seemed low. I got it jump-started and drove about 150 km over the next few days.

Took it to the dealership, and they tested the battery. Health was at 90%, but the charge was only 40%. They recommended driving it more often.

Luckily, I had a road trip (about 700 km) shortly after, and I’ve also taken some short trips since then. I assumed the battery would be fine, but after leaving the truck parked for a week, it wouldn’t crank again this morning.

I’m at a crossroads now. Should I:

Replace the battery, even though the dealership says it has 90% health?

Take it to the dealership for a full charge and see if the issue persists?

I understand the battery is 5 years old, but 90% health still seems decent. I’d appreciate any advice or insights from those who’ve experienced something similar.

Thanks!

Since your battery is five years old, it’s likely you will be replacing it sooner than later anyway, so you might as well do it now.
Wal-mart has a group H8 battery with a four year warranty. It’s bigger than the battery that came in your truck. When you take your old battery out, there is a small plastic piece in the bottom of the battery tray that is easily removed and the bigger battery will fit right in.
You can also get a battery blanket from Mopar that fits the bigger battery. I believe it’s part #
5033397AE.

If you aren’t driving enough to charge the battery, you will probably discharge any size battery eventually. I would consider getting a smart battery charger.

Replace it with an H8. You got 5 years which is about 2 years more than anyone else on here. Not worth the hassle and uncertainty to try to stretch it.
I got 6 years of battery service on my 2013 and 7 years on my 2015.

What j hunt said above.
Many 2019's didn't even get 2 years, there were lots of threads about it. My 2019 died after 15 months, and I used a charger on it weekly.
Get a 2 amp sized battery tender if that's all you drive.

Mopar battery every 2 years + a little for my 2019.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I've decided to replace the battery this week for peace of mind. Additionally, I'm considering buying a battery booster pack. Living in a small town, and given that my battery has failed twice recently, I think it’s a smart backup to have, even with a new battery.

As for charging the battery at home, that’s not an option for me. We don’t have covered parking, and with heavy snowfall in our area and temperatures consistently around -18°C (sometimes even lower) throughout most of the winter, it’s just not practical.

On that note, does anyone have recommendations for a good battery booster pack? I’d like something reliable and suitable for a truck like the RAM 1500, especially for use in harsh winter conditions. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You'll get a variety of answers on the jump pack., I have the GOOLOO GP4000 and have used it 2x to help other V8 owners. Works well, currently about $85.
Watch You Tube "Project Farm", he tested a bunch of them awhile ago...

Gooloo GT4000 w/preheat.

When I test drove my truck it had to be jump started for me to drive it. I bought it and they said they would replace the battery. I didnt check that they actually did that but it only lasted about 15 months. I DIY replaced it with an Interstate H7 AGM and that one lasted 40 months. I am now on my third battery which is a Duralast H7 AGM.

Good options in this thread, saving this thread for later, I'll probably need a battery soon, mine is at least 6 years old now, I drive probably once a week, so far it's doing well, mainly because I do a full charge with a smart charger every couple of months.
