Moaning-Droning-whatever: very frustrated

CIA experiment. Random things in your house are laced with LSD so the doses are as random as the mystery noise in your truck.

Wouldn't you just poop yourself if you found a harmonica!! Just imagine how many beers you would have to buy us... 🤔🤣🤣🤣

Seriously tho, I hope you find what is causing the noise...

I actually like the harmonica idea, laughed myself silly the first time I saw it. I must try it sometime. Can you recommend an inexpensive brand suited to road conditions? :ROFLMAO:

But seriously, there are plenty of acoustic opportunities under and around the truck.

Anything tubular with an open end is a potential tuned cavity that can sing like a flute. One friend had an aluminum ladder atop his service van that loved to hum. I believe a bit of expanding foam in the ends of the rungs cured that.

And then there are the brakes. One end of a pad not glued to its caliper and getting rubbed just slightly at the right angle by the rotor can squeak or moan.

Or a piece of trim not quite secured for its whole length, with air passing at the right angle becomes a reed instrument.

The roof rack on my Mazda will whistle, but only on a cold morning if there is frost on the roof. Only frost, doesn't do it when rain, snow, ice, or dry, only frost. 🤷‍♂️

Just examples, hope you find it, we're all curious.

Had that with my old work van anytime I had an extension ladder on it. Was angled just right the air blowing over the ring tubes was like blowing over the mouth of a bottle.

I can name that tune in 4 notes... But you have to be old enough to know what I am talking about...

Not sure of the OP got a fix. I am late to this post, was looking for something else when I saw it. Does the truck have MDS? I had a similar problem and discovered that a noise my truck started making, very similar to a loose drive chain on a motorcycle, or droning noise, which only came on when coasting, or in "ECO Mode" when the MDS was active, was due to dirty oil.

An oil change and sticking to top tier fuel made the slack chain sound/droning go away. Turns out the camshaft phasers are very sensitive to dirty oil.

Another noise my truck started making was like a horrible whistle noise at highway speeds. That was due to the OEM fender flares and air passing through them. Ended up pulling the fasteners and reinstalling them which fixed it.

My truck has gotten progressively worse over the last month or so. After doing a lot of searching in the forums, I was convinced it was the ANC system. It happens when I'm alone in the truck or with a passenger in the front. I very rarely have anything or anyone in the backseat. Yesterday on my way home from work, it started doing it again, so I pulled over, left the truck running and pulled the F12 fuse for the ANC system. Radio sound went dead (as expected). Started driving again and was hoping to hear silence. NOPE! It continued 🤬. Any ideas? Could it be the front active air dam moving? Grill shutters? It's not consistent - happens while keeping steady speed/rpms, foot off the gas, foot on the gas. The droning goes up - goes down - stops - returns. It doesn't change with anything noticeable. Doesn't sound like a bearing. I can't be without my truck as I use it to get to work, so I'm reluctant to take it to a dealer until I'm fairly convinced what it is.
@Pop's Ram, I'm curious if you were ever able to get to the bottom of this noise. My truck has 153K miles and this noise started in the last few thousand miles. It's getting slightly worse as time goes on. I never hear it when idling, which is often, and it exhibits no similarity to a bad wheel bearing. It comes and goes with no input from me and nothing I do (braking, acceleratiing, turning the wheel, etc, etc) seems to alter or stop the noise in any way. The volume of the noise has always stayed consistent, and the duration of the noise is anything but consistent. Happens at all speeds. I will try the ANC fuse thing to be sure.

Hoping someone may have some new information.

Well - never found the source of the noise, but it stopped as the weather got warm. Never heard it all summer long. Now that winter is upon us again, she's a moanin just like before! No pattern - no increase or decrease with speed - and I STILL haven't found the harmonica ;). All kidding aside, it's annoying!

Do you have an audio recording?

Bummer! I wish it were as simple as a dang harmonica...both an easy fix AND and respect for whoever would have done that to me. I may need to use that trick on someone someday soon. In fact, I have a harmonica in my truck as we speak so I am armed.

We both have 2019 Hemi Laramie's...I wonder if there is a connection there.

I will try to get one, but I'm afraid the moaning noise won't be loud enough to be audible on a recording. will give it a shot...stand by.

Every once in a while I get the droning noise through the stereo. It is the noise cancelling and its annoying. Sometimes I open the window and it stops, other times I put the truck in park, shut it off, open the door and restart it. Most of the time it goes away after that,

without reading thru everything here (again), try rolling up your tonneau cover if you have one.

Thanks for the ideas! I don't think mine is ANC related, and I dont have a roll-up, but do have a tri-fold soft cover. I believe I can rule that out too given the miles I've put on with the cover and the nature of the sound going in and out at many different speeds.

My response would be the same as Andymax - I've had a tonneau cover since (almost) day one. It's not the ANC as I pulled the fuse for it and it still happened. It's only happening in the colder weather. Doesn't matter if the truck just started or has been driven at normal operating temps for a while. It pops up at random times with no noticeable pattern or cause.

Well it certainly sounds like we have the exact same problem. I had a mechanic tell me of a non-urgent concern about one of my axles/differentials, but that it was far too early to worry too much about it. I'm trying to reach hime and will advise if this is at all related.
