Is the 3.21 gear sufficient?

Hey Guys I’m new here and have a few questions. I recently bought a preowned 2019 1500 Laramie Limited 4x4 crew cab. I was unaware at the time about the difference in gear options. I just assumed all these trucks towed 11k+. I’m actually not 100% sure that I have a 3.21 gear but I think that’s what I have. My concern is that I have a 24ft boat that with the trailer is listed at 5210lbs. Full tank of gas, coolers, and all the gear, I’d say I’m pushing 6000lbs. I’m not a fan of pushing a tow vehicle to or near its limit. I live in central Florida (very flat). Because I live on a lake with a boat lift, I’ll only need to tow it a handful of times a year, so the truck will mainly be used as a daily driver.

Should I be concerned at all about this gear for my towing needs?

Does the 3.21 have any advantage over the 3.92?

How can I figure out the gear I have? None of my paperwork tells me. I’ve attached a couple photos of the door jam stickers in case you guys can help me make sense of it.

Thanks so much guys.

The 3.21 will be fine for towing your boat. More than adequate for 6000lbs, it’s rated for over 8000. I’d have no concerns for the towing you described.

There should be a sticker on the bottom of the rear axle showing the gear ratio. Also you can just look at your rpm’s as you’re driving down the highway at 70 mph. If your rpm is close to 2000 you have a 3.92. If it’s closer to 1600-1700 rpm then it’s 3.21.

The primary advantage to the 3.21 is that’s it’s more fuel efficient at interstate speeds.

You're fine as described.
In Florida, with a boat that likely has very little frontal drag area, being less than 6500#, should be no problem at all for your truck.

Go on some of the tow threads on this forum and you will read many opposing views but they are mostly 5th wheels or travel trailers that have big frontal areas and are weighing 2-3K more.

In Fla, you are good to go. Flat is your friend. So is the hemi and the great Ram frame. The tranny will keep you in the right gear, programmed for the. 3.21, especially if you use the tow-haul mode. You might drop it into 4 low when pulling the boat up the ramp. My 3.21 tows like crazy. No problems. You’ll be glad you have the 3.21 for better I-95 mpg when not towing, and less engine wear over the 200k life of the truck if you take care of it.

So I’ve been looking at all the 1500’s at all the dealerships here in Orlando and I’ve seen maybe 1 or 2 1500 rams (both rebels) that even come with a 3.92. Seems like all the dealers here are only ordering 3.21’s.

How far away is Lakeland from you? They (Lakeland RAM) have several 19’s with 3.92 as of this morning on their website. Edit - I see Lakeland is like 56 miles away. I drove an hour to buy mine, perhaps you'll find what you want there. A couple of the 19's were 4x2's with 3.92, I didn't look at very many on my phone.

Sorry I should have been more specific. I meant Laramie Crew cab 4wd. I’ve not seen one of these for sale with the 3.92

Well, the 3.92's are not really plentiful down in Fl, but they are there. In my brief period of looking for the poster I noted that there were more 20's that were equipped with 3.92 than 19's. Could be that people just didn't purchase the 3.21's in favor of the 3.92's but then, it's Fl, not mountain country so IDK. Anyway, whatever trim he wants, they are still around or due in. There's a lot of 4x2 (figures) with anti-spin which should work ok for the boat ramps, although I still like the 4x4, mileage penalty isn't that big.

I did see some cheap Classics (19's) for sale but didn't bother posting anything on them. I think the lowest price I saw for a Classic CC 4x2 was $26K, which for a new V8 truck ain't too shabby... After all, that was "state of the art" as a 2018 model.

Same problem here in Tallahassee. I had 2 requirements when I bought my truck, sport appearance group and 3.92 gears. They only had 1 truck that met those requirements, so I bought it. Screenshot_20191022-202719~2.png
