hurricane or 5.7/6.4 hemi

Hi everyone. Im new to the forum. I have a 2012 1500 hemi and is a great truck. So my work truck (chevy) i know is the problem, is cashed and not worth fixing. Im thinking about getting a new ram this year in summer or late this year when the rates go down. I have read that the hurricane motor truck is horrible and has major problems. I do not want any of this etorque crap. How are the 25-26 hemi's compared to the hurricane. I just want long term reliability. This has been a major issue on all vehicles past 10 or more years.

At this point, with the Hemi having eTorque vs. the Hurricane not yet having a long track record, I'd say reliability is a crapshoot. I'm more concerned about the rest of the truck - especially electronics and software - and RAM technician competence - than I am with the drivetrain.

Test drive both. If v8 sound is important, get the Hemi.

BTW, where did you read "that the hurricane motor truck is horrible and has major problems" ?

I'm not seeing anything like that over at 3.0 Hurricane S/O

2026 ram trucks come with 10 year 100K mile powertrain warranty regardless of engine choice.. that should be a piece of mind for the long term buyers

I think your engine searching has you a little confused. The hurricane thus far has proved to be quite a solid platform. Jeep had some growing pains early on with it but since Ram implemented it nothing but cudos from owners and testers alike. So far only benefit of the 5.7 over the hurricane is the noise.

The biggest issue with the 25+ trucks has been software issues, not mechanical. The Hurricane is a fairly solid engine. No 6.4 for the 1500s

Either your hearing is bad, or you’re listening to very biased people who only like the Hemi. The Hurricane engine was used for years by Jeep so many bugs worked out before it got to Ram. The 2026 is the second year with this engine in the 1500, so first year software/wiring harness issues are worked through.

Remember Ram had to do a lot of electrical work to get the old Hemi working with the new electrical architecture in the 1500 going forward. It’s very possible to have similar first year issues even though it’s an old engine design.

I drive a 2023 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi, e-torque, great motor, zero issues. But if I were in the market today for a Ram 1500, I'd go Hurricane. It doesn't seem to have the issues that the the 3.4l Tundra had and has. Test driver one, it is a beast of motor. If you want a 6.4 Hemi, you have to go HD.

HO takes premium, SO takes regular, but mid grade recommended

That sucks. I was looking forward to it. That would be the only reason to buy a newer truck, would be to get a 6.4 without Etorque. I guess it's back to my original plan of drive this one til the wheels fall off.
