I had my oil changed last year and went to a different place than usual so I could also have them install some tires I ordered from Tire Rack. Well, they sent me a photo my oil pan. I was shocked. Equal to if not worse than the OP. The entire bottom of the pan was bubbled from the rust. They even said they were afraid to take the drain plug out for fear that it would start leaking.
Fast forward a few months and I decided to start doing my own oil changes. The drain plug location is horrible, so I also ordered a Fumoto valve to make the next oil change an easier and cleaner job. While down there, I decided to try and do something about the rust on the oil pan.
I can’t for the life of me find the original photo from the oil change last year, but if I do I’ll post it here. I started with a wire brush, and while it was getting some of it off, I would have been there all day. So I switched to a wire brush drill attachment and that made pretty quick work of it. I will say, even after knocking off all the bubbling (so many rusty flakes everywhere) there were still a few spots that I was afraid to go further with. Definitely deeper rust, almost scab like. If you ever picked a scab as a kid, you know what happens, and I didn’t want my truck to start bleeding any time soon. Those “scabs” are easy to spot in the photos.
Once that was all done and fumoto valve installed, I taped it off and sprayed on 3 layers of Dupli-Color Rust Fix. Photos attached.
I’ll keep you all posted on how things look at the next oil change time. Also looking forward to a much faster/cleaner oil change.
Now I just need something like that for the oil filter…..
