I’m looking for some assistance with an issue I’m experiencing. I have a 2024 Ram 1500 Limited with approximately 22,000 miles. A few months ago, the Engine Stop/Start (ESS) system began shutting off the engine while the vehicle is still moving at approximately 3 mph during deceleration.

I brought the vehicle to the dealer, who escalated the concern to STAR. The truck was in and out of the dealership for about a month. STAR ultimately advised that this behavior is considered normal operation.

However, based on my experience driving multiple Ram 1500s equipped with ESS, the engine has never shut off until the vehicle is fully stopped (speedometer at 0 mph with the slight vehicle rock-back).

This vehicle is equipped with the eTorque system, which manages ESS operation. There are no warning lights or diagnostic trouble codes present.

Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated.

That is NOT normal behavior. Mine doesn't shutoff until after I'm fully stopped. And that's after about 1 to 2 seconds. It's never shutdown before fully stopping. I have a 2020 Bighorn that's never had software updates.

What model years were the other trucks you've driven with stop/start? I ask this because they redesigned the system for model year 2022 and up. I remember reading a thread from a couple years ago that talks about this behavior where it shuts the engine down before coming to a complete stop. And the redesign was mentioned in that thread.

I owned a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited for four years, my wife currently drives a 2025 Wrangler, and I was in a 2026 Ram 1500 Big Horn loaner for approximately one month. In all of these vehicles, the speedometer reached 0 mph, the vehicle settled (rocked back slightly), and there was a brief 1–2 second pause before the engine shut off.

In my current vehicle, the engine shuts off before the vehicle has fully stopped. This is particularly noticeable when pulling into a parking space, where the engine shuts off and then immediately restarts, causing the vehicle to lunge slightly forward. This behavior is disruptive and raises concerns about safe and smooth parking operation.

That is not normal for the Auto ESS. The dealer is blowing you off. Take it to a different dealer.
On a side question, does it restart normally?

Below is the thread I was referring to in my previous post. Maybe I put too much stock into what people were saying in that thread about a redesign, but I stopped following that issue since it wasn't applicable to me. It would be helpful if anyone who has a 2022 thru 2024 Hemi etorque would chime in with how theirs behave...

The vehicles you mentioned (with the possible exception of the 2026 1500) aren't applicable to my post. As I said in my post, the change seemed to affect 2022 and later Ram 1500's with etorque. You didn't say which engine the 2026 BH has. I'm sorry I wasn't more specific in my last post, but I was talking specifically about the Ram 1500 Hemi with etorque behaving that way. I don't follow the Jeep Wrangler community so I can't say if they experienced anything similar. But they also didn't get the etorque Hemi as far as I know.
