I know this question has been brought up countless times but I'm about to do my first oil change since purchasing my 3rd gen RAM Eco D and was wondering if anyone has used AMSOIL 5w40 MS European Engine Oil. I've read so many threads with conflicting information - some RAM owners saying the oil is perfectly fine to use and other owners stating it does not meet the MS-12991 specs and should not be used. AMSOIL has an oil change kit on their website for 3rd gen Eco D's which states it is compatible.

I just need a yes or no answer if this oil can be used in the 3rd gen Eco D's. Thank in advance.

If you are looking for a yes or no answer, then I think no. You are right, there have been a lot of controversies over this, mostly between those who have a small business selling Amsoil products and those who want to follow the RAM recommendation for engine oil. Just before my first oil change back in 2022, I wrote Amsoil; their response was that their oil product did not meet the recommendations of the MS-12991 specification. This is the reason, I suspect, Amsoil does not carry the MS-12991 certification.

The bottom line is that many engine oil products carry the MS-12991 certification, so why debate Amsoil when several other oil brands are available?

I've been using it since I bought my new 2020 1500 back in April of 2020 with no issues at all. Just sent an oil sample to Blackstone with no areas of concern other than the increased aluminum which is common in the ED. Below is a good thread to read regarding the elevated aluminum in the ED. I have used Pennzoil Platinum in the past too. Depending on how my next sample goes, I might switch back as they are comparable in price. I'm out of warranty so I am not worried about that aspect of thing.

If Amsoil can provide you with documentation (an email) that they would step up for you in the event of an oil-related engine failure, then that would put my mind to ease on using their oil.

Otherwise, there are plenty of "approved" oils you can use while in warranty; just change it around 5-6K miles and you should be good.

What always upset us was that there was constant Amsoil advertising. It got to be obnoxious. If a guy is going to use a non-MS 12991 oil, why not just pick a less expensive one off the shelf? I did a lot of testing with Quaker State 5W40 and it looked really good in analysis after towing at max capacity and overheating the oil to the point that the ECU started pulling power. I pushed that oil to the limit and it help up. That was impressive to me. And I paid $18 per 5 quart jug for that oil at Walmart.

In short, Amsoil is a complete waste of money.

This topic has been talked about plenty in a few Facebook groups I frequent. That Amsoil tends to test towards the top of the list of better performance per oil analysis. Take that for what it's worth.

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback. I emailed AMSOIL's tech support team and they provided the following info :1745509588987.png

Hopefully this clarifies some things for a lot of us on AMSOIL products. Take it as you want. The oil they are mentioning in the email is their 5w40 FS European Motor Oil.
