Dumb question.. What exactly causes the “ticking” noise with broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Have been curious about this for a long time… what exactly causes the “tick”. Is it from a loose bolt moving around or Something else?

The sound of high pressure exhaust squeezing out through the gaps. It ticks because the exhaust manifold is only under pressure briefly during the exhaust cycle.
