Door Rattle

Hello,

Recently leased a 2019 1500 Big Horn (new body style). The truck has 234 miles on it. There is a rattle in the drivers door panel. The rattle is fairly subtle without the radio on but when playing any type of audio there is a very noticeable rattle in the drivers door. Im not talking about very loud, heavy bass type audio. Any audio at any volume including talk radio.

I took it into the dealer for the rattle. They pulled the door panel off and told me it was fixed and it is now worse than before. I love everything else about the truck and intend to buy this truck. Is this rattle something I need to just live with or should I push the issue further? Any advice?

Thanks,

Ben

Push it. See if they'll let you take the tech for a ride and make sure they understand the noise you want them to address.

Or, the door panel shouldn't be too hard to take off, could just pull it and fix it yourself.

Most dealers are going to suck at finding and fixing rattles. There is little to no money in it for them as they have to get paid by the manufacture for the work they perform and to do it properly it can be time consuming. I can't stand even the slightest of squeaks or rattles, so I have removed all 4 door panels and used stinger roadkill professional and applied it to the backside of all of the interior door panels. there are several spots that tend to rattle because of the way they are designed an assembled. What area of the door is the rattle coming from? The areas in red all have road kill, the box in green has 1/4" thick adhesive back foam strips behind it. The biggest source of rattles for me is the big rectangle from the door handle back. The section is made of numerous parts that are basically heat welded together. The would only ratle during bass heavy music but that was unacceptable so now its roadkilled and silent no matter what the speaker is doing.

Hey Ben,

We'd recommend speaking further with your servicing dealer and doing ride-along with dealer service staff to demonstrate that this issue is still present. If you need any assistance working with them, just private message us at any time.

How hard is that panel to remove and put back on?

They are held on there pretty well so getting the first clips loose takes a bit of force to the point you think something is going to break but it doesn't. I have attached the Factory guide, I have also added notes in red from my experience to help along the way if you choose to go down this road.

I just bought a 2022 Long Horn, and after spending almost $100k, I find it unconscionable that A - Ram hasn't addressed this issue, and B - there isn't an offer from them to supply the plastic clips that will invariably break. I have yet to find a service dept that will properly address these types of issues, so sad!! The best solution is DIY

Welcome to the forum . Out of all the Rams in my area none of them rattle . I think you just happen to be one of the lucky ones . However I would let the dealer try to fix it first .

Addressed what issue? This isn't a common problem.

Maybe excessive, but I can't stand rattles and love sound quality.

Crank up the jams and start putting pressure on various points. The two removable bolt covers (under the grab handle and behind the door open latch) are prone to vibrate. I put tessa tape behind those and anywhere plastic touched metal, especially up by the mirror.

Also added foam sound deadening foam on every door panel fastener.

I've removed all the door panels twice and haven't broken any clips/ fasteners.

My 2019 big horn has the slight rattle. I’ve just lived with it but I’ll check those bolt covers mentioned above and report back if it fixes it. I doubt I’ll get that lucky that it’ll be easy

When I take the panels off to do sound deadening in vehicles, I always do a tap test to see where I need to do additional/preventative deading or separation using foam, tessa tape, or butyl mat. These are the trouble spots I found in these doors. Kinda already mentioned above. The window switches are culprits too, but mine were pretty snug and are not making any noise.

The dealer is never going to spend the time you will on trying to hunt noises down.

Also, find a subwoofer frequency playlist on spotify etc. Don't go crazy loud, maybe start around 60-80hz and work your way up.

Once you get the rattle, press on the panel in various spots to try and kill it. You'll know where you need to go from there.
