Did a 4th Gen tonneau cover (tri-fold, short bed) fit a 5th Gen RAM 1500? Dealer say YES, manufacturer say NO!!

I placed an order for a "generic" brand tri-fold tonneau cover from Amazon Canada with a specific description for a 5th generation RAM 1500 2019-2020 and surprisingly received a Rough Country brand box! However box is PN# 4409550 which is, according to Rough Country website, a fitment for a 4th Gen RAM with short box. I contacted the seller on Amazon and he answered that any tri-fold tonneau cover from a 4th Gen will fit a 5th Gen because both beds have the exact same length and width. However when I got on Rough Country, they have specific part, which is PN# 44307550... So I contacted Rough Country hot line this morning and they answered that the PN# I receive is NOT compatible with my 5th Gen RAM 1500 and I need the other PN# 44307550.

However, why I am asking you this question now is because I contacted my local dealer where I purchased my BIG HORN DT and they answered that they usually use any tri-fold tonneau cover for a 5th Gen RAM... no matter if it's specific to 5th Gen or some old stuff for the 4th Gen... as they are all the same, according to them too!

So I am TOTALLY confused now... why did manufacturers like LEER, Rough Country, BAK, etc., are carrying a specific PN# for 5th Gen RAM 1500 which is a different number that the 4th Gen if the cover is the same??? WTF?

Every manufacturer I shopped via for a tonneau cover told me straight out that the 4th generation ones will NOT fit. The one company wouldn’t even sell me the part based upon that information.

Are you sure that part is for the 5th Gen and not the Classic?
 
This is for the longbed but I bought my step-dad a lightly used extang trifold for a 4th gen for Father's day when he had his 4th gen. Shortly before giving it to him he bought a new 5th gen big horn. Figured I already had the cover might as well give it a shot before trying to sell.

To my surprise it fit pretty well but there is a slight gap on the back of the cover wear it meets up against the top of the bulkhead on the left and right side of center.

I know I didn't see much difference between my step dads truxedo he had on his 4th gen and the truxedo I put on my 5th gen. So they may be interchangeable but can't confirm

So it might depend on how the cover installs against the bed as well (rails, clamps).

Just joined the forum yesterday and I can tell you first hand that the frame is different between the 4th Gen and the 5th Gen DT. I found someone on CL selling a Truxedo roll up tonneau cover in excellent condition. I tried it out on my 2020 RAM 1500 DT QC Bighorn and the bed dimensions are different. The frame was narrower at the cab and just slightly shorter. The seller removed it from a 2017 RAM 1500 QC. Needless to say...I didn't purchase it.
 
I actually just traded my 2019 RAM Classic SXT (4th Gen) for my 2019 RAM Big Horn (5th Gen) and I test fitted my old tonneau cover from my 4th Gen and did NOT find it to fit very well... yes it fit... sort of... but it seem a bit too short for my 5th Gen like if both the front and rear seal were super super close to the edge of the bed, so I did think it could be weather-tight that much... so I simply sold it in the classified...

Same here I have a Trifecta 2.0 on my 2020 and it is to short. I am dealing with them right now and they are telling me it’s not installed right. I have had these covers on my last three trucks and they fit just fine

I finally returned the Rough Country tri-fold to the reseller and he didn't argue to refund it and cover the return shipping. Since Rough Country themselves confirm that this product is not compatible it's just the common sense.

Instead I just placed the order from the well reputed brand, TYGER AUTO, for an hard aluminium tri-fold cover PN# TG-BC5D1044 specifically for the 2019-2020 RAM 5th Gen, from Amazon Canada (not from a marketplace seller) and I had the most unbelievable deal, thanks to Amazon's lightning deal.... the MSRP for this cover in Canada is 1108$ CAD and I pay 475$ CAD!! Ship & Sold by Amazon Canada, no mistake, no fake! Yes, it's near of 60% OFF! :oops::oops::oops:

It's not a super low profile aluminium cover like the BAK Flip, but in Canada the BAK Flip sells for nearly 1500$ CAD... so for a third of this price I can't imagine a better deal for a hard aluminium cover!

So....
I have been going back and forth with extang.. it boils done to this

bed side rail only 74 1/2 inches
Internal bed length 76 inches

total cover length 80 1/2 inches
bed total without tailgate extension 80 1/2 inches

They said they contacted ram and said that ram said it would fit..
She said dodge instead of ram which shows me that is not true

Just flat out frustrated

Did the cover you have now is a specific PN# for the 2019-2020 5th gen or is it a generic PN# for the 4th gen? Most companies apparently have a specific PN# for the 2019-2020 while some "Chinese" manufacturer said they have a fitment for 2008 to 2020 including the 5th Gen... my friend at the RAM dealership told me that he measured himself the bed between a 2019 Classic short bed and a 2020 DT short bed and that they are identical inside, only the tailgate shape is more rounded on the DT when it's flat and square on the DS.... so this is why the dealer said that any cover should fit. But based on my own experience, my conclusion are the same as you, the 4th gen cover is too short for the 5th gen, but maybe by 1 inch or so... it fit yes, but it's not enough weather tight IMO.

I appreciate your feedback as I thought I was losing my mind. There is a specific part number for the 5th gen vs the classic model as the classic is acutually thinner.

I found out the name of the shop they purchased it at and went there. Im tired of the run around with my dealership and doing my business else where. They agreed with me that it looked like crap even after we moved it a numerous amount of times. There was always light shinning through on one side of another.Guys were great there they are ordering another cover to see if it changes and are going to get me another model if it doesn’t .

Automotive Specialists in Clinton NY if anyone is interested. They don’t do a lot of customer stuff but they stand behind what they do
 
My factory 4th gen tri fold cover is currently on my 5th gen, fits fine

The answer is...yes and no. The 4th generation if I remember correctly...the front of the bed is straight across width-wise, my 2019 Ram DT has the front of the bed that's curved right before the space in between the front of the bed and the back of the cab (hope that makes sense). So the measurements are the same but that part of the bed is just a slightly different shape. Same thing when I put on my gator quad fold...that's when I noticed it.

that’s exactly what I run into. If I move the cover to where is should fit I and up with gaps at the top because of the curve. Maybe people are used to that or having the cover to short on the back1E3408AA-C4EA-445E-8AAF-ECDA7B0F0098.jpeg

rhats to short..corners on the cover should cover the end corners

Exactly! I got my Gator quad fold and it fits fine but it does look a little funny at the front of the bed since the cover doesn't fully hide the front lip lol.
