Check engine light

Just got back from a long camp trip this past week. The truck worked and pulled my trailer flawlessly. We made it home with zero issue at all. I went to start my truck yesterday morning and it had a weird stutter start but fired up no problem. About 15 seconds later my first engine light popped up. I used the uconnect app to see what the light was and its telling me there's a serious concern with the catalytic converter. The truck is running fine and doesn't seem to affect it at all. But I didn't notice under load once on my way home the exhaust made a weird raspy sound during the 2-3 shift. I will be taking it to the dealer the first chance I get. Anyone else heard of this issue?

Not on the 1500, but they might just say since you have aftermarket exhaust, they won't help you (but may charge you for the diagnosis if you choose to have one done).

I specifically asked the dealer if I replaced my exhaust if it would void warranty and I was told no. I'll be calling tomorrow to see when I can get it looked at.

Hi 19 streak,

We certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you’d like an additional layer of assistance as you work with your dealer, please do not hesitate to send us a PM. We’d be happy to help.

Sorry about your problems and hope it can be corrected soon for you. I have to ask though, can you explain how you used the Uconnect app to find out the problem? I didn’t know you could do that. Thanks

No way in hell it would void your warranty, a dealership might try and say but the reality is the converter and sensors are located before the muffler, and in no way should they be affected.
If the converter blew the insides out like the honeycomb I’d have them replace my exhaust lol.

Thank you. The truck is at the dealer right now waiting on an assessment. I've also noticed the past 3 fuel fill Ups that's the truck is leaking a significant amount of fuel from on top of the tank and running down the sides. They are also looking into this. If I get negative response back I will absolutely take up your offer and send you a pm.

The uconnect app runs a vehicle system/diagnostic report every so often. This is the first time I've had an engine light on and sure enough the app sent me a report showing a minor description of what could possibly be the issue.

Kind of what I'm thinking. I have run aftermarket exhaust on my trucks for the past 20 years without cat issues.

My dealer said the only thing they won't warranty after an exhaust is the aftermarket exhaust itself. From the Cat forward is still under warranty, just not the parts I replaced.

Though maybe a shady dealer would try to get out of it somehow.

Not sure about Canada, but here's what the EPA says... more on EPA.gov. Can't imagine Canada not following suit in some fashion.

The Clean Air Act requires manufacturers of light-duty vehicles to provide two federal emission control warranties: (A) "Performance Warranty" and (B) "Design and Defect Warranty." These warranties are provided by the vehicle manufacturer and apply to used vehicles as well. The warranty period begins from the date of sale to the original owner.
The Performance Warranty covers repairs which are required during the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) because the vehicle failed an emission test. Specified major emission control components are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). The specified major emission control components only include the catalytic converters, the electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU), and the onboard emissions diagnostic (OBD) device or computer. If you are a resident of an area with an Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program that meets federal guidelines, you are eligible for this warranty protection provided that:
  • Your car or light-duty truck fails an approved emissions test; and
  • Your vehicle is less than 2 years old and has less than 24,000 miles (up to 8 years/80,000 miles for certain components); and
  • Your state or local government requires that you repair the vehicle; and
  • The test failure does not result from misuse of the vehicle or a failure to follow the manufacturers’ written maintenance instructions; and
  • You present the vehicle to a warranty-authorized manufacturer representative, along with evidence of the emission test failure, during the warranty period.

In the US anyway, sounds like that Cats would be covered for 8 years.
