New Spy Photos, Lead To More Questions...

Last week, we showed you the latest spy photos of the upcoming 2020 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty Mega Cab Dually. Since then, our friends at Real Fast Fotography have been busy catching some of the 2020 Ram 2500 Mega Cab prototypes on the streets of Metro Detroit.

These new pictures have been telling us a lot about the upcoming Ram Heavy Duty design language. We mentioned before that the designers over at the FCA Product Design Office are allowing this new truck to get the more traditional Ram big-rig styling over it’s all-new 2019 Ram 1500 brother.

In these new Mega Cab photos, we see that there are two different trims. One appears to be the new Laramie (thanks to it’s chrome mirrors peeking out from under the camouflage) and there is one Laramie Longhorn (which is carrying a similar wheel styling as the current 2500 Laramie Longhorn and has a visible chrome trim showing through its camouflage).

The most interesting fact is, it seems that these current prototypes are using completely new designed front ends and pickup boxes from the 1500 model. However, it seems the cabs are the same ones of the current 4th generation of trucks.

While we have pictures clearly showing some of the new Ram Heavy Duty prototypes having similar steering wheels and dash elements from the all-new 1500, Real Fast Fotography caught pictures of a Crew Cab 2500 Tradesman prototype with its rear door open exposing the interior trim which is identical to the current 4th generation rear door trim and assist handle.

Begs to question, why is there a need for a Mega Cab if the all-new 1500’s Crew Cab is four inches longer and can recline the rear seats like the Mega Cab?

We do know that the 4th generation body lines do not flow with the 5th generation boxes. It leads to another question, are these cabs reversed engineered to accommodate the components for the new dash during testing or will the cabs of these new Heavy Duty models continue to be the same structure, but with new exterior door styling? Only time will tell.

I am really beginning to think that the 4th Gen cabs are going to continue with the new HDs for the near future.

Hopefully the interior changes, not just the exterior. I really like the 1500 but think I’m gonna hold out for the 2500.

You could be right though I was told that the exterior will be all new. One thing I noticed is that on the Ram 5500 prototype, the bumper portion of the front fender flares doesn't line up with the rest of it, which definitely looks like a piece from the 4th gen 4500/5500s. The bumper piece looks thinner and straighter so I'm sure we'll also see a new fender design (at least on the 4500/5500s)

The interior will be all new for sure, expect it to be the same as the new Ram 1500s.

I think you're right and that is the most likely scenario, I'd expect them to go with the 5th gen cabs as well. My only reservations on it is that there are a ton of HD prototypes running around right now and as far as I can tell every one that I've received spy shots of has a DT cab. We should get a better idea of what's going on as we get closer to January.
