Catch Can

For those that have installed the J&L catch can....any issues arise like throwing codes? I'm considering getting one for myself so I'm just seeing if anyone is having problems with codes or even warranty claims being denied by having one installed.

If installed correctly, a catch can should never cause a check engine light. Not should it have any effect on your warranty.

Don't worry it's won't throw codes.
For me after 1,000 miles it's hasn't caught enough oil to even cover the bottom of the can.
On my 3.6L Gladiator it would catch allot of oil after 5,000 miles the 3 oz can would be full.

Wow that is such a small amount, I’m actually surprised it’s so little.

For everyone else that has one installed, how much does it collect every 1000 miles…is it similar to what jmr is seeing?

I get about 1oz every 1000 miles. But I am using a cheaper Amazon billet catch can.

No issues here with mine. Straight plug and play install with no indicated oil flow bottleneck issues. I can't imagine how it could throw a code.

Is there a difference in the catch can for the SO hurricane vs the HO hurricane? Same one good for both motors?

Shouldn't be much if any difference on the PCV lines for the catch can

Only code would be if the catch can caused a vacuum leak due to poor connection.

I've used catch cans on all my newer vehicles (pics), but my buddy who owns a speed shop and Pro Stock races, told me Manufacturers can and will deny engine claims if they "catch" you with one (he also feels they aren't really that beneficial)..food for thought..I like them, but seals and threads can be sketchy and leak. (apparently I like strut bar braces also🤣)20200129_174207.jpg20241115_081643.jpg20151121_080154.jpg

Received the J&L catch can and just got it installed. I went ahead and bought the 3oz extension since I live in a colder climate during the winter. I’ll check it next weekend after about 500 more miles.

I could see needing the 3oz extension for the 3.6L I couldn't believe how much oil got collected in my Gladiator.
This is my S/O Hurricane after 1,600 miles it might be a table spoon of oil.
Perhaps the person building my engine actually measured the proper ring gap.

I figured it would be better to be safe than sorry. I would imagine that condensation build up could pose a problem in the winter here in Milwaukee/Chicago.

I have a 2025 Limited with the HO engine. It has 3,300 miles on it. The oil level is down to ¾. It was full when I purchased it.
  • Is that normal to lose that much oil?
  • Would a catch can capture?
  • At what point do I need to add oil?

Seems like 3,000 miles is a good point for changing the break in oil I did mine at 1,000. Put in exactly 7.5 quarts and keep an eye on it.
I installed the J&L catch can on my S/O and after 2,000 miles it has caught only a table spoon of oil.
On my 3.6L Gladiator that J&L 3oz catch can would fill after 4,000 miles it was traded for my 25 Rebel (for a larger bed and towing).

I can't tell you what normal oil consumption is on either Hurricane engine. I'm assuming when you say it's down to 3/4 you mean on the dipstick. Which means it's down about 3/4 of a quart. That could be normal in a new Hurricane after 3k miles. Other owners might be able to give input on that.

A catch can won't help with oil consumption.

You can add oil any time it shows below full on the dipstick. Don't let it get below the low level line on the dipstick, and don't overfill above the full line. I would also suggest changing your oil at this mileage for the first oil change. It's certainly not required but I do that on every new vehicle I buy, but usually at closer to 1k to 1.5k miles.

Hurricanes don't have dipsticks . It's an oil level sensor with reading displayed on dash.

As suggested, good time to get that factory fill oil out of the engine and out fresh in. Use good quality full synthetic. Monitor oil consumption after fresh oil change.

A.carcj can won't prevent the engine from using oil. If you are sucking that much oil through the PCV system it's got other issues.

If you have been "playing" with the power of the Hurricane with spirited driving and going into boost frequently, it will use more oil.
